Demonstrator At T. Eaton Company Starts 5-Week Course of Lessons “The right way to make a garment is the easy way,” said Mrs. Juditha Blackburn, dressmaking demonstrat or at the T. Eaton company store, Thursday afternoon in the initial lec ture in an five weeks’ course in dress making which she is inaugurating at that store. The large cafeteria where the lecture was held was crowded, evey chair being occupied and many of the listeners either standing through the address or taking seats on the tables. A. Pollock, merchan dise manager of the T. Eaton com pany, introduced Mrs. Blackburn, Mrs. Blackburn spoke again this af ternoon. The first two practical lec tures Monday and Tuesday afternoon at 2.45 o'clock, will be open to the public, it was announced. They will be held in the cafeteria on the fifth floor. The persons enrolled will then be divided into classes, which will meet as follows: Monday, Wednes day and Friday mornings at 10 o' clock; Monday, Wednesday and Fri day afternoons at 2 o'clock; Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings at 10 o'clock; Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at 2 o'clock, Mrs. Blackburn will deal first with materials and the coming styles. The practical dress is the one which will remain in style until it is worn out. Fashion fads are not style, Mrs. Blackburn said. Sometimes a gar ment is out of style before it is com pleted, she said. ,A becoming dress is always good style, and in order to get a becoming style one must con sider the contour of the face and fig ure. Good lines are the seams placed becomingly on the body. Persons attending the course may make garments or just take notes as they choose themselves. “The simplicity of the modern styles makes it possible for women to be taught how to make them in a few lessons,” Mrs. Blackburn said, “Twenty-five years ago such was not the case. Now, if a woman would just get a piece of cloth, sew it up at the sides and make holes for head and arms, and tie a string around the waist, she would have a fashionable dress. “Foundation principles never change,” Mrs. Blackburn continued. One of the important things to be taught in the course is the alteration of patterns to fit the individual. The demonstrator will teach her classes how to take their own measurements and alter patterns according to them. “The pattern is the most important thing in cutting a dress,” Mrs. Black burn said, “You must make the pat tern conform to yourself. If there is a twist on the sleeve the twist all be taken out of the pattern fst.” Mrs. Blackburn said that she would teach the class to take measurements of their skirts so they would not have to go to their neighbors or get their husband to get his head down on the floor to get it straight.
