SELLING WHITE MEN.(Is»Ifhelii-n.ridi ri-edofedni-er-intheen•reorft-•n-ivcmt;tertedes;rn-02 jweinWhen this atrocious slander upon Gen. Harrison wys started, Mr. Gardner, the editor of the People's Press, wrote as follows, in relation to it. “We say attain and again, for the information of distant readers, that the law on which Harrison voted had nothing to do with debts nor debtors. It was no pait of onr civil code. It related solely to the punishment of SCO I. N-DREL8 and T OGUE3, (of like character with those who circulate this calumny.) such §s break into their neighbors houses nt night it* steal and plunder—such as burn haystacks, kill horses and cattle, remove landmarks, obtain money under false pretences, destroy brrdges, break down tombstones, rob the graves ol their dead, live in a state of fornication, assist prisoners to escape from justice, c. It had no connexion with the debts or business of an honest man. Felons and villains alone came within its cognizance—and none but a ft Ion'8 or a villains heart oould be so base as to attribute to a valiant and faithful poor old soldier, like Harrison, a design to sell bis neighbor lor debt! 1have no charity for such men. I mean such as have seen the law. or are acquainted with the true fuela of Uie case.Thomas Morris, late Van Buren Senator, in Congress from Ohio, was the father of the bill which the Tory Papers say was to sell white men for debt. Eli Baldwin, who in 18d6 was the Van Buren candidate for Governor of Ohio, voted with Ge n. Harrison on this very bill. Col. Gault, of L'cking county, Benjamin Hinton of Fayette county, Gen. Alexander McConnell of Morgan, Thomas Shannon of Belmont, Gen. Webb, of Hamilton and several others, now conspicuous Van Huren men, voted for the passage of this hill in the Houac of Representative, which body it passed before it was taken up in the Senate. Dare the Tory Spark say that these men voted to “ sell poor white men for debt V’ But the man, if he may be called so, who would sell himself to the Xenia Bank for the paltry sum of $200, as did the nominal Editor of the J ory Spark, is fit for any dirty work the Tories hereabouts may set him at. We leave him to the glory that may accrue to him by ranking up and republishing falsehoods so palpable that they curry contradiction on their very face.count ci use ex pec men, ordersIt i and tlt; factio more quen t comp proud he ca tion, i gixes and tlt; have 'he stiThtioi: ti vannaCCT4 Othe oiByI, JThM acoi ly for: in Sa1 say, tlJ 9Unite obedilt; home to wit we do gain I pi me.
