Jicarilla wins honorsAwards were presented Tuesday to five UNM top winners in the First Annual Shapiro Collection Contest at the University of New Mexico. Dr. John F. Harverv. dean of library services.m1eiJJeSilpresided at the reception and awards ceremony, and Jack D. Rittenhouse of the UNM press spoke on techniques of book collecting. The event was sponsored by the UNM libraries, the Friends of the UNM Libraries and by Dr. S. R. Shapiro, a New York medical doctor and patron of the libraries.“Possibly the best collection in the world of material on the Jicarilla Apache“--in the contest judges’ opinions--earned Veronica E. Tiller, a member of that tribe who is a UNM graduate student in history, the second prize of $100. She will donate her collection of law briefs, history of land grants, photographs and other materials, gathered at great cost in effort and time, to form the nucleus of a library for her people at Dulce, N.M.
