EVERYBODY!HA PPY MOTHER’S DAY!—A.V.D.ONE OF THE MOSTimpressive and beautiful Cinco de Mayo celebrations was presented by Sylvan Park Elementary School students in their attractive courtyard.The veranda, serving as a stage, was decorated with brilliantly colored paper bouquets made by the children in Mrs. Claire Sloane’s and Mrs. Sue Goldberg’s classes.Chairs and colored mats were arranged in the yard facing the stage where h o n o r ed guests were seated.Guests HonoredHenry Morales, student and master of ceremonies, welcomed the visitors and introduced the honored guests who were: Capt. Norman H. Judd, commander of the Van Nuys Division of the Los Angeles Police Dept.; Henry O. Dyck, administrative coordinator of Area J of the Los A n g eles Unified School District; and Officer Gil Moya, who serves the Sylvan Park School area.Moya received highly tnthus iastic applause when introduced, demonstrating the great friendship which exists between him and the children.Other honored guests i n t roduced by Morales were Mrs. Jamie Schmitts, Mrs. Horten se Bautista, Mrs. Kathy Ball, and Mrs. Mary Martinez, ladies who have volunteered many hours of valuable service to Sylvan Park School as well as in other Valley Areas.Have Nine ChildrenSpecial tribute was paid to the Abraham Contreras family, whose members and activities have been closely associated with the school and community over the years.J u anita or “Jenny.” Contreras was 3 years old when her parents Mr. and Mrs. Pasqual Moreno came to Van Nuys from Arizona in 1916.Theirs was a family of nine children, Manuel, T o n y , Chalo, Richard, Mary, Esther, Rachel, Sarah and Juanita.Manuel is the owner of the ‘ Moreno Paving Co., and an attractive and com-pact 1 ittle restaurant, “Jenny’s Cosina” on Kes-ter Ave. in Van Nuys. Richard owns the Moreno Record Shop on Kest£r. Attends SchoolWhen the Morenos first came to Van Nuys, their c h i ldren attended Van Nuys Elementary School. In 1925 Sylvan Park Elementary School, was completed and the children were transferred to the new school, which was a b out 1 00% Spanishspeaking. Jenny was 12 years old then. Her mother, Clotilde, became the first PTA president of Sylvan Park School.Jenny married Abraham Contreras and they have made their home on Delano St. Daughters were born to the Contreras — Betty Contreras Duran, Priscilla Costello Castro, Eleanore Contreras Baca, Delia Contreras Oakley and the youngest one,Lisa, currently a student of Sylvan Park School, at this time.Offered ShelterAbraham built and operated the grocery store on the corner of Kester Ave. and Delano St., which is now operated by daughters Betty Duran and Eleanore Baca.Jenny and Abraham not only love their own children, but one might say they love the children of the whole world as well.Theirs was not the millionaire neighborhood exactly, but this warmhearted family sheltered and raised 29 homeless c h ildren, sharing their s i m pie and wholesome worldly goods with those less fortunate.Times were not by any means easy, but problems were met and solved with pride and sincerity.Headed PTAC o mmunity members came to them with their problems and the Contreras became active in community affairs.Jenny became president of the Sylvan Park Elementary School PTA.Gratitude and credit for the rich life which she describes is attributed to her parents and the high ideals which they instilled in their children.Mr. Moreno was president of the Community Chest. The parents were faithful adherents to their churches which were the S e v enth-dav Adventist, the mother’s church, and the Cat holic Church, which was Pasqual’s religion from childhood. Each r e s p e cted the other's views.Mr. and Mrs. Moreno, their daughter Jenny, her daughter Priscilla Castro, Priscilla’s daughter Sonia Gonzales and her daugher, 3-year-old Raquel, were honored guests at the school’s Cinco de Mayo celebration.Present ProgramAlso honored was Mrs. Monica Benavidez, a hard working school volunteer whose birthday was being observed on the same day.The program opened with a “History of Cinco d e Mayo” by Beatriz Franco and Maria Cerda.Mrs. Miller’s fourth grade class danced the fascinating Chihuahua.“La Chacra” a song of the farm was presented by Evelyn Frank’s and Ger-t r u de Fremont’s third grade classes.Everyone wore beautiful customes.Cathy Villar’s kindergarten class presented a deli ghtfui dance. “La Bamba.”Children PerforinT h i rd graders sang “Cielito Lindo” and “Las Mananitas.”The first and second grade class of Harriett Corr danced the “Chiapa-neeas.”The beau tiful instrumental presentation of the song “Las Mananitas” by flutists in the sixth grade, taught by their tea cher, Mrs. Romaine Baekhus, was excellent.Frigate Bird FastThe fastest animal is the frigate bird which can fly more than 100 miles an hour.FIVE GENERATIONS of Moreno family, pioneer Valley residents, are welcomed at Cinco de Mayo celebration held at Sylvan Park Elementary School, Van Nuys. Kim Smith, Kim Love, Margie Rehart, Bonnie Tener and Rosalie Infuss.Faculty ThankedThe traditional Spanish dances “Jesusita” and “,1a-rabe Tapatio” were performed by fifth and sixth grade students who were: Jose Yniguez, Fidel Castro. Alberto Moraga, Abe-lardo Lopez. Pedro Tira-d o m E rnesto Heredia, Jose Luis Alvarado, Au-gustina Carmona, Rocio Marillo, Ruth Perez, Eivia Zendejas, Maria Cerda, Lina Moraga and Rosa Luz Herrera.These talented young people performed their lovely dances again later in the afternoon, at the Van Nuys Library Cinco de Mayo celebration.M r s. Carmen Donia,principal of Sylvan Park Elementary School, gave the closing remarks, and thanked faculty members Ruth Ward, Elizabeth Cervantes and Ruth Skinner for the programs presented by their classes.Eleanore Gordon was complimented for coordinating the entire Cinco de M a v o celebration. Her husband. Louis was busy with his camera during the entire colorful program.He’s 90 TodayLewis Gutos was responsible for the, excellent sound system. The lovely corsages presented to honored guests were provided by Daniel Skinner.And today, one week and a day later, the community congratulates the Morenos, 88-year-old Clotilde, delicate and lovely and her devoted Pasqual Moreno, who still insists upon “going to work” with his son Tony at his paving company, but whois celebrating his 90th b i rthday today.
