Manager W. B. McCollum of the Douglas Chamber of Com merce reported to the Board of Directors Friday that the state will spend some $1 million on route 666 between Bisbee-Doug las International Airport and Elfrida during the next two years. McCollum said he learned of the highway improvement pro ject in conversation with Peter Wilharm, newly-appointed state highway commissioner from Benson. Initial construction set for No vember, will involve 4.94 miles of highway from Bisbee-Doug las to McNeal costing $400,000. The second phase will involve 5.95 miles between McNeal and Elfrida costing $600,000. This is set for November 1968, McCol lum said. McCollum reported that the proposed goodwill trip of Doug las chamber members to Cana nea had been postponed until after July. He also discussed an inquiry from an electronics firm, a toy maker and several builders who are interested in this area. The board approved a sugges tion from McCollum that a re presentative of the Cochise Col lege administration be named an ex officio member of the board. Jerry Broking, chairman of the Economic and Development Committee, reviewed the recent visit of STRATCOM, Comman der, Maj. Gen. Richard J. Me yer, and outlined future plans to interest STRATCOM people in locating here. It was understood that STRATCOM people would be ad vised to be sure to look at Doug las before making a final de cision on where they planned to live. STRATCOM transferees are given a six-day, expense paid orientation stay to look over living sites. Broking felt an ef fort should be made to interest STRATCOM people in visiting Douglas while on the orientation tour. The board voted $200 to be used by Broking’s committee in its STRATCOM effort. An industrial week has been scheduled for Douglas Oct. 4, Broking said. His committee is preparing a 35mm slide pre sentation on Douglas industry and Douglas’ living attractions. A display highlighting Doug las businesses will be erected in 10th Street Park. The cham ber’s Trade and Promotion Com mittee will be asked to join in this effort, he said. Effect of agriculture in the Elfrida-Mc Neal and Apache-Rodeo areas on the Douglas economy will also be outlined, Broking added. Sal Jary of the Trade Promo tion Committee reported the committee is joining with the State High School Rodeo Asso ciation in a “‘go Western’ cele bration May 25-26-27. This would tie in with the association’s ro deo at the county fairgrounds that weekend. Chamber mem bers met with the association Thursday night and discussed promotional plans. Eric Steinhoff reported on the results of the Jaycee election of officers and Herb Newcomb re viewed the recent chamber board election.
