The quadrangle contains a portion of the famous Mono Lake, which is about 15 miles in diameter.This lake has no outlet and lies in a beautiful mountain valley where there are perhaps 20,000 acres of volcanic land that under irigatibn. will yield large crops of alfalfa, grass, and other products. To the west and southwest extends the great backbone of the Siera with a multitude of peaks which tower to heights af 10,000. 11,0011, 12,000, 13,000 feet, and even higher. South of the lake are the 5 Mono craters, once ‘active volcanoes, | ^atfd one or more similar craters are j roll ably covered by the lake its el L Muter rower Streams Tolu nine, Merced and Sab Joaquin Rivers head in this high moutain region. The Tuolumne Hows through the beautiful fletch Hetchy Valley and the Merced through the more famous Yoseinitc Valley in the Yuse-mitc National Park- On all these strains there arc splendid water powers; Indeed Hie Tuolumne and the San Joaquin, whose waters merge in the region to the northwest of the Mount Lycll qudrangle, have probably as much if not more possibilities for the development of water row cr than any other two streams in the state. Portions of the Moiio and the Sierra national forests arc- included in this area.
