John Kohart Charged With Killing His Infant Child, is Arrested and Lodged in Jail.A UOItKIBLK STORY Ofc* HltL'TAI-ITY.To-day Mrs. Jobn Rohart sent a note tomarshal Can»enter charging that her hu»-husband bad killed their infant child, andasking for his arrest. Marshal Carpentersent coroner Whitten to Mrs. Rohan’s resideuce, on Pearl street hill, to investigatethe case. About noon the coroner teturn-ed from hia examination and order themarshal to arrest Hobart, which was done,and he was lodged in the county jail.This afternoon coroner Whitten held aninquest, at which the following testimonywas taken:Dr. Easley testified, i have no doubt the fall Mrs. Rohart says she received at the hands of her husband caused the miscarriage.Mrs. Alice Rohart’s testimony—John Rohart was drunk on Monday night. May 10, and forced me to have intercourse. 1 , was obliged tosubmit, or I believe he would have killed me. He then left me, saying he was going away. On Monday night be came back and entered the room, and on entering he had a butcher knife in his hand and threw it on the bed where I was tying and said, “take that and do what you 0—d d—n please with it. He said on Monday night, remember, (i—d d—n you, we are here alone, and you have got to submit, and he then forced me to ao what, in mv judgment, has been the death of my child. The place that he forced me in to have intercourse is a store goods box about 2hi feet , long and about 3 feet high open on top, where he forced me backward and hurt me very much.Testimony of Mrs.*Virginia Shearrer. I saw John Rohart on Monday night. May 10, 1380. He was at my house about 7 p. m. He was drunk. He wanted me to go with him to see his wife, to prevail on her to live with him again, and that if she refused it would be the worse for her. If she did not live with him he said he was a »— of b— if he didn’t—and then stopped. I was at John Rohart’s on the night of May 12th. He attempted to either choke or smother his wife, saying to her “you shall never tell anything that passed between us.jane Judge testified. 1 know John Rohart. He abused his wife by cursing her and making threats of doing other violence. Mrs. Rohart wanted to send for a doctor, but lu* said d—n the doctor: I don’t want any. Mrs. Rohart told me that John threw her across a dry goods box and hurt her so much that she was afraid it would k: 11 her, and she knew the fall across the box killed the child.Verdict of the Coroner.—Elijah Whitten, coroner of Floyd county, Indiana, being notified that John Uobart had killed his child, repaired to the place where said child wav lying, and ujon examination found itto be a four month’s foetus, andsaid foetus was the result ofa miscarriage of Mrs, Alice Rohart, the wife of John Rohart, and said miscarriage was produced by the cruel and inhuman treatment of said John Rohart by forcing his wife, Alice Rohart, to have sexual intercourse with him by throwing her in a dry goods hox thereby severely injuring her, the said Alice Rohart.Rohart was arraigned this afternoon forpreliminary examination, and the hearingis pending as we go to press.
