WEOL makes big changesGlenn Beck is in, Bill King is outStove FogartyThe Chronide-TelegramThe broadcasting game is one that can change as swiftly as a flip of the radio dial, j WEOL-AM 930 is making some major changes to its programming in the coming weeks, including the introduction of a new, expanded hour of local news from 5 to 6 p.m. -and the naming of a new host for the Elyria station’s 6 to 9 a.m. morning-drive show to replace the recently-departed Bill King. The new morning host, who has bt*Rn hired Lull has not yet been identified, will begin duties in a few weeks, according to Craig Adams, WEOL’s operations manager.“We’ll have an announcement regarding the morning show in a few weeks, Adams said. The new morning host is a broadcasting veteran from the region, according to Adams. In the interim, Adams and Bruce Van Dyke will fill in on the morning show. The duo lias been co-hosting the morning show since Monday.King's last day on the air was Friday according to Adams. It was the company's decision to let him go.Adams declined to discuss the reasons for K i ng’s departure.King had worked as an on-air personality with WEOL-AM since the mid-1990s, according to Adams. He began in the afternoons andwas then moved to mornings.” In an unrelated move, the station has announced this week that it will carry the nationally syndicated “Glenn Beck Show weekday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon starting Monday. The new block of programming will eliminate the 9 to 10 a.m. “Other Side of Morning Drive” show hosted by Larry Wright.Beck's show was previously broadcast by WTAM-AM1100, a Cleveland station owned by the Clear Channel chain.“Clear Channel decided to move (Beck) to their Akron (stations) and replace him with Jerry Springer,” said Adams. That’s when we started looking at the Beck show.” FCC regulations covering broadcast programming bars smaller stations from carrying the same programs aired by bigger stations whose signals can he beard in the areas served by the smaller radio stations. This will mark the first time all three hours of the program will be heard in this area.” said Adams. The addition of Beck stemmed in part from an assessment by station personnel that the ABC Radio Network programming WEOL had been carrying for some time in the JO a.m. to noon slot, was not as compelling as we wanted it to be,” said Adams.Although Beck is marketed as a conservative on-air personality, the decision to add his program to WEOL's lineup was not made from a conservative vs. liberal standpoint,” said Adams.“He does a show that hadalready been very popular In the market, has terrific production values, and a lot of energy,’ said Adams. ‘It’s packaged very well.”While Beck labels himself “very conservative” when it comes to family-oriented issues, he does not call his program pol itically conservative, according to Adams.“That’s what separates him from the others,” said Adams, referring to the programs of such nationally known political conservatives as Sean Han-nity and Rush Limbaugh. 'They’re all about politics, but that’s just a small part of what Glenn Beck does,” said Adams. “Politics are not his primary focus.WEOL-AM becomes the 185th station to air the Philadelphia-based Reck, whose talk shuw is distributed by Premiere Radio Networks.Adams said the station will continue to do interviews with political figures, community leaders, authors, celebrities, and others that Wright previously packaged in the 9 to 10 a.m. slot.“Instead of having one hour set aside for all of that, we’ll work to incorporate those elements more into the morning show, the Midday Report (noon to 1 p.m.), and the new, expanded block of programming at 5 p.m.,” said Adams.A start-up date has not yet been set for the revised 5 to 6 p.m. programming slot Lorain County Planting and Publishing Co., publisher of The Chrunicle-Telegram, is majority owner of Elyria-Lorain Broadcasting Co., which operates WEOL.
