STAFF REPORTS SWANSBORO — Leilani Criss went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and scored two runs in leading Swansboro High’s soft ball team to a 12-2 win over ‘Richlands Tuesday evening to ‘claim at least a share of the East Central 2-A Conference championship. The game was called after the fifth inning due to the 10- run lead rule. The Pirates, who finished the conference regular season with an 11-1 mark, will play a one game playoff with East Duplin if the Panthers can win on Fri day. “We are ecstatic,” Swans boro head coach Drew Farneth said, “One of our goals was to just make the playoffs. The girls worked hard to accom plish this.” Tanisha LeBlanc added a hit, one RBI and three runs while Tara Ballard, Kathleen Olson and Danielle Towler each had a hit for Swansboro, which scored four runs in the first in ning and five runs in the sec ond. Katie Reed earned her 13th win in 14 decisions, striking out five and allowing just two runs. Tia Gidrey went 1-for-2 for Richlands. The Panthers, the defending Eastern Regional champions, need to win on Friday at home against Croatan to share the league crown with Swansboro. East Dublin is 10-1 in league play while the Pirates are 11-1. “As well as we did last year and the fact that we had a lot of the girls coming back, we ex pected to get back to the play offs,” said Panthers head coach Greg Jenkins. “We have to win our next game to tie the confer ence championship. “If that happens, we can ei ther flip a coin for the top seed or we can have a one-game playoff.” Liz Hatcher, a senior right hander who surpassed 600 strikeouts last week, earned her 10th win in going the dis tace, giving up one run while striking out five. Junior Kelly Brown had a pair of hits and a run while Bri anna Whaley had two RBIs for the Panthers. In a neighborhood affair that saw the two teams combine for 22 runs, 22 hits and 12 errors. Lejeune led 6-5 entering the fifth but the Bulldogs loaded the bases on two walks and a hit-batsman. Two singles, two errors and two more walks lat er, Dixon had a 10-6 lead. “It was a little bit of their do ing and some of our own,” said Lejeune coach Pete Anderton “That’s been our trouble all season. The Devil Cups, who finished their season with a 6-12 overall record and 3-7 in the CPC came right back to score three times in the bottom of the fifth, but Dixon answered with two more in the top of the sixth to seal the win. Steve Andryshak was 3-for-4, drove in two runs and scored twice to lead the Bulldogs. Rus sell Edens and Daniel Walker also had two hits apiece. East Duplin, 14-8 overall and 7-4 in the East Central, was un able to capitalize upon Swans boro’s 3-2 conquest of Rich lands on Tuesday night. “(Swansboro) did just what we wanted them to do,” said East Duplin head coach Kirk Kennedy. “And the way we lost (four unearned runs) really (hurt).” East Duplin forced the extra inning by erasing a 3-0 deficit with three runs in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Travis Aldridge’s single and an error set the stage for Dustin Hatch er’s two-run triple. With two outs, Hatcher scored on Corey Houston’s single. However, the fifth error led to the Panthers downfall in the eighth. A sacrifice bunt put the baserunner at second. After an intentional walk, Hancock de livered. Losing pitcher Daniel Bliz zard, a senior right-hander, al lowed six hits and six walks while striking out six. Ben Springle earned the win in re lief, holding the Panthers hit less the last 22/3 innings. Springle also batted 2-for-4 with a triple and scored twice. Kennedy said the Panthers sur vived Springle’s triple in the seventh and found themselves in jams numerous innings be cause of shaky defensive play. GOLF 4-A Championship: At Pinehurst, Raleigh Broughton won the 4-A men’s champi onship, marking its sixth title in seven seasons. Webb Simpson led Broughton, winning the indi vidual title with a two-day total of 141 at Pinehurst No. 2. Simp son had a 1-under 71 in the fi nal round, helping him hold off Wilmington Ashley’s Chip De selms, who shot a 67 to finish two shots back overall. Broughton shot a 291 Tuesday to finish with a 590 for the tourna ment, three shots better than de fending champion Morrisville Green Hope. Before Green Hope’s title last year, Broughton had won five in a row. = 3-A Championship: At Vass, Wilson Fike’s John Tyler- Griffin got off to a hot start and went on to win the 3-A men’s championship. Tyler-Griffin shot a 33 on the front nine and finished at 2-un der 70 in the final round at Woodlake Country Club. He finished with a 140, five shots better than Smithfield-Selma’s Derek Wallace. First-day leader Robert Wil helm of Franklin, who shot a 69 on Monday, had a 77 in the final round. Southwest Guilford won the team title, finishing with a 605 for a 12-stroke win over sec ond-place Fike. It was South west Guilford’s first golf title since 1987. 2-A Championship: At Buie’s Creek, Northern Vance’s David Faulkner and Charlotte Catholic rallied to win 2-A men’s championships. Faulkner shot a 67 in the final round at Keith Hills Country Club, erasing a seven-stroke deficit to win the individual ti tle. Charlotte Catholic won the team title by shooting a 296, overtaking first-round leader Western Alamance. Faulkner came into the day tied with six golfers at 74, well behind first-day leader Cody Walker of Lenoir Hibriton. But Faulkner’s 5-under round Tuesday coupled with Walker’s second-day 76 was enough to win with a 143. Faulkner finished two shots back. Western Alamance led with a 292 on Monday, but Charlotte Catholic erased a five-stroke gap to win the team title with a 593. Western Alamance fin ished six shots back. = 1-A Championship: At Pine hurst, Cameron Cheek shot a 72 to win top individual honors and lead defending champion Siler City Jordan Matthews to the 1-A men’s championship. Cheek finished with a 1-over 143 to win the individual title at The Club at Longleaf. East Sur ry’s Tommy Gibson, who entered the final round tied with Cheek at 71, finished two strokes back. Cheek finished third in last year’s event, which was won by teammate Burton Wood. But Wood was unable to compete in this year’s regionals to qualify for the state championship due to in juries suffered in a car wreck.
