Dallas Baptist University, the No. 5 team in the nation, came out of the loser’s bracket to take the National Association of In tercollegiate Athletics District VIII championship with two wins over No. 13 Lubbock Christian University Saturday at Kobernot Field. Lubbock had beaten Dallas 6- 2 in their first meeting Friday to drop DBU into the loser’s bracket. But Dallas came back in the closing game Friday to score an 8-5 win over Tarleton State University and earn the right to take on Lubbock in Saturday’s championship games. All LCU needed was one win Saturday to take the crowd, but the Chaos could not pull it off. Dallas took the first game 3-2 and the second game 12-10 to take the district title and ad vance to area competition. The Sul Ross State University Lobos won their opening game, going 17-12 over Jarvis Chris tian College Wednesday. The Lobos drew Dallas Baptist on Thursday, and the Sul Ross nine played one of their best games of the season. Going into the top of the ninth, the score was tied at 1-1. Second baseman John Bow man opened the inning with a single to right center, and Nacho Vela came on as a cour tesy runner. Shortstop Rio Acosta laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved Vela to second. Gus Al varado grounded out to second, but Vela made it to third on the play. Jay Trees, pinch hitting for catcher Burril Daly, made it to first on a field error at shortstop, and Vela scored to give the Lobos a one-run lead. Lobo pitcher Mike Gonzalez, who went the distance, gave up a triple and a single in the bot tom of the ninth, and Dallas tied the contest. The Lobos could not score in the top of the 10th, and Dallas picked up the winning run on two singles and an intentional walk. The loss moved the Lobos to the loser’s bracket, and they had to play Tarleton in the 6 p.m. game Thursday. In the Tarleton contest, Lobo hurler Jeff Price started on the mound, but got into trouble early. The Texans picked up three runs off Price and had the bases loaded with no outs before Lobo Coach Byron Brooks put Donny McNatt on the mound in relief. The Lobos picked up one out when a Texan runner was thrown out at the plate trying to score. A single scored two Tarleton runners before a Lobo double play shut down the in ning. As it turned out, five runs did the trick for the Texans. Mc Natt shut down the Texan bats, but the Lobo bats sputtered. By the end of the contest, the Lobos had only picked up three, giving the Texans a 5-3 win. The Lobos had three players who made the District VIII all tournament team, Jeff Pannell at first, Acosta at short, Gon zales at pitcher and Opie Par sons in the outfield. Pannell hit .500 for the tour nament and had 21 put-outs in the Dallas game. Acosta fed Pannell 10 of the 21 outs in the CBU contest for one of the best fielding performances of the tournament and hit .364 during the week. Gonzales posted five strike outs against Dallas while giving up only eight hits and two walks. Parsons hit .357 and had an outstanding tournament in the field. Other players named to the all-tournament team were Mike Mendazona, catcher, LCU; Wes Markum, second, TSU; Brad Holcomb, third, LCU; Martin Eddie, outfield, DBU; Sam Roberson, outfield, DBU; Mike Rodriguez, designated hitter, DBU; Larry Lee, pitcher, DBU; and Gordon Heiselbetz, pitcher, LCU.
