By Republic News Service BRIDGEWATER — Formulas which are used in physics to meas ure the speed of sound were brought to life by members of the Bridgewater high school physics class last week. Prior to making the trial measurements, the class cal culated the actual speed of sound for that particular day and in order to make this cal culation the correct tempera ture reading was obtained (rom c. C. Cornwell, in charge of the local weather station. The next step in the experi ment was actually timing the speed of sound. Seven pupils. Shir ley Phelps, Robert Leiferman, Jay ice Firth, Carol Scharffenberg, Shirley Ramlid, Verona Hofer and Donald Rinehart were the calcula tors; George Welbes, the timer; Jack Kunkel, the gunner and Ro bert Solem, signalman. Checks were made at distances of one-fifth of a mile, one-half mile, 7 to mile and one mile. The closest calcula tion to the actual speed of sound s was 1015.4 feet per second.
