LOCAL GOLF NOTESThe Statesville Country Club was well represented at the eighth annual Charlotte Country Olub’s Invitational Golf Tournament, which was run off cm the sporty links of the Charlotte Country Club, May 7th, 8th and 9th, with Messrs. Jack Wagner, Charles B. Gilbert, Charles Horton and L. M. Graves, as the quart|i? of local amateur golfers who tjSpH 'paxt in the tourney.Turning^iin the lowest meaal score, in ■•the qualifying rounds, Jack Wagfier was,' placed in the Championship flight, but in his first matchtplay .with the veteran S. L. Diggli^. .Charlotte as his opponent, Jack lost out to Diggle on the 20th hole, 1 up. Playing in the consolation of the championship fight, Jack lost out, this time to W. H. Williamson, Jr., 3 and 2.Mr, Charles B. Gilbert qualified for the sixth flight with an 89. In his first round match play, he defeated Ralph Van Landingham Jr. one up, to advance to second round play.Charles Horton, qualifying for seventh-flight play with a 92, won his first round match play with T. C. Guthrie, Jr., of Rockingham, one up, in 19 holes.Mr. L. M. Graves, qualifying for the ninth flight with a 98 score, won his first round match play by defeating H. M. York, of Baden, 3 and 2,With pretty weather and with the afternoon's becoming much longer, the local Country Club is a busy place these days, and no doubt will become a much -more popular sportsman’s domain, as the late spring and early summer days reach us. A drive by the local links on any afternoon, shows the growing popularity of the local club’s sporty links course of nine holes, as one can see a number of interested golfers making their way around the fairways of the of the local links, trying to beat old man Par.”'The local Country Club’s Tennis Courts are also popular these late spring and summer afternoons, and are very -much in demand, as the racquent wielders try their skill on the splendid clay courts, put in A-l shape, for local tennis lovers.Interest, no doubt, would be quickened in the local golfing activities, if a spring handicap tourney for local golfers could be run off on the local links. The local country club’s tourney committee should get busy and arrange a tourney for its members. It, no doubt, would create muc-h more interest, among local golfers.
