By NAILS FLORIO There were heroics by Joe Koralik, regarded by Coach Paul Camastro as the best player in the Cath olic League, and there was another sparkling pitching performance by Chuck Shearer, regarded by Coach Camastro as the best hurler in the Catholic circuit. But it was still an unhappy week for the Weber High School baseball team The gloom in the Horde baseball camp stemmed from the fact that they dropped two important games to sister school Gordon Tech, which has proved to be the jinx team of the Weber nine. Both losses to the Rams came by 3 to 2 scores, the first in a league game on Wednesday at Horner Park and the second in state dis trict play Saturday at Ridgewood High School. Last year the Rams also eliminated the Horde in the district meet, taking that one 8 to 7. The Horde opened their week’s activities on a happy note on Tuesday when they defeated St. Rita at Hanson Field, 5 to 3. In the game Koralik knocked out three home runs, an unprecedent ed feat in Weber history. In the first inning of the next game, against Gordon Tech, he lashed out another round tripper for a precedent shattering four home runs in a row. It was hard to as certain from existing Chica go area prep records wheth er it was a Chicagoland re cord. But it is a no question-about-it record as far as Weber baseball histo ry is concerned. Also in the St. Rita game was a game-opening home run by Derek Hill. Weber had a total of seven hits and four of them were ho mers. Veteran senior hurler Dave Lang was on the mound for Weber and al lowed but four hits while striking out five and walk ing four. The three runs scored against him were un earned, the Hurde commit ting three errors that fig ured in the scoring. In the first game against Gordon on Wednesday the Horde were off to a flying start, Dave Dyrek tripling and then walking in on straight Koralik’s fourth ho mer. But from that point on there was no more Weber offense, the lone hit being a fifth inning single in the fifth. The Rams, who had scored one run in the third on a hit and a sacrifice hit, tied it at 2 to 2 in the fourth on another hit and a sacri fice fly. The winning run in the sixth came on a hit and an error by Tim Peraino Gordon’s pitching, which proved airtight after the first inning splurge, was handled by Steve Holowicki. Dyrek and Mike Pudela shared the pitching for We ber with Pudela sustaining the defeat. “We were just swinging too hard. Everybody was trying to get a home run and as a result we popped up 13 times,” commented Coach Camastro after the disappointing setback. The second half of the sad Weber-Gordon story of course occurred on Satur day when Shearer dropped a heartbreaker, also 3 to 2. Gordon tallied two runs in the first inning on four in field scratch hits. After that he was untouchable and al lowed no more hits. Only one Rams’ player got the ball to the outfield. But the Rams did tally again in the second inning on a Weber error to end their scoring. Weber, which had gotten an unearned run in the first inning, got another un earned tally in the fourth. They were hitless off of Rams’ hurler Tom Otis un til the top of the seventh when Terry Lippert opened with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice. Deck then doubled but be cause of the uncertainty as to whether the ball would be caught, Lippert ad vanced only to third. It still Carl Favaro of the Shamrock coaching staff, who directed the boxing intramurals, jumps in to separate Frank Orto (left) and Harry Sego viano in their 189 pound ring battle. The deci sion went to Segoviano.
