Arthur Hunniecutt, honorary mayor of Northridge, has proclaimed May 19 as the 11th annual Northridge Salute to the Arts themed “America the Beautiful,” and a festival of exhibits and contests will open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Northridge Recreation Center to celebrate the event, according to Mrs. Ralph Dill, founder and president of the Northridge Cultural Arts and Historical Assn. (NCAA). Mrs. Arsel Andrews, member of a pioneer family of Northridge (then called Zelzah), will be honorary hostess of the day and Dr. Carmelo Gariano, head of the international language department at Cali fornia State University, Northridge, will serve as master of ceremonies. Noted artists, historians, celebrities and civic figures will attend the event, both as exhibitors and judges of contest entries at the festival. Hundreds of rib bons and certificates, cash prizes and 14 perpetual trophies will be awarded to best-in-show and theme entries. Artifacts, antique treasures and his torical costumes and vehicles will be shown in the Historical Memories Division, chair ed by Mrs. Harry Fisher and Mrs. Dennis Carter. Valley Federal Savings and Loan trophy will be awarded in section one, in dividuals and groups, and the NCAA’s Founder’s trophy in section two for muse ums and shops. A community birthday cake, commemorating 65 years of commu nity identification, will be served with tea in the Historical Exhibit Room. Painting and Drawing (advanced and professional adults) Division, with Mrs. John Bowater and Mrs. Almira Ranstrorm as chairmen, will present the best of show winner with the Northridge Civic Assa. trophy. Painting and Drawing (amateur and student) Division will be headed by Rita Miles, Mae Bourdon and Ann Braden, who will present the Valley Dodge trophy to the adult section winner and the North ridge Junior Woman's Club trophy to the amateur and teen section winner. Crafts and Sculpture Division for amateur and advanced artists is chaired by Mrs. Bobette Shafton, assisted by Mmes. Lois Brandt, Julie Welsh, Beverly Bryant and Dolores Michaelson.
