Cox United States Half DollarsThe first half dollars were minted in 1974. with only 5.300 being made. 8The Flowing Hair Liberty design was used on the halfs of 1794-95. and from 1796 to 1797 a new type of liberty head was used. The average value of the second type of half dollar is $700 00 in fair condition. Our first half dollar was designed by Robert Scot. and is worth $50.00 and up in fair condition.The easiest early half to buy or trade for is the third type made from 1801 to 1807. the bust type with the revised eagle design. There are many coins of this type that had numbers in the date stamped ove reach other, such as the 1806 over “5.” The value of the third type of half dollar is $30.00 in good condiiorL I think these old half dollars will go up in value as more collectors find out how inexpensive they are for their age and low mintages, and because they are some of our first coins. Also, the silver dollars of this type art all rare and sell at over $100.00 each in good shape.The fourth type of half dollar was the Capped Liberty Head design minted from 1807 to 1S36, Like the first halves, these were about two mm larger than modem half dollars- There are many die varieties of these coins .such as large and small dates and overdates. The Capped Liberty design is one of our most beautiful coin designs, and was used on coins from the ' * cent to the 50c. The half dollar was the largest face value L'nited States silver coin struck from 1805 to 1835. when no silver dollars were being minted. The half dollar was reduced to its present size in 1836. when only 1.200 halves were minted. Even with this extremely low mintage. the 1836 half is valued at $50.00 in good condition.The sixth type of half dollar was1839 to 1891. The halves made from 1879 to 1890 arc all scarce. The rarest is the 1873-S without arrows at the date, which is unknown in any collection.The seven 111 Half dollar was designed by Charles E. Barber. It has a Liberty head facing the right, tind an eagle on the reverse. These were minted from 18982 to 1915. The average value in good condition is Sl.50-S2.00. The first commemorative half dollars were minted in 1892-93 to commemorate the World's Columbian Exposition and Christopher Columbus. The value of this half dolla’- is $9.00 in unc.Many different commemorative half dollars were minted from 9115 to 1954. and many are rare today.The eight half dollar was the Liberty Walking type made from 1916 to 1947. This coin was designed by A. A. Weinman, and is one of the best designed United States coins. The cost of one in unc. is only $4 50.In 1948 the first Frankiln half dollars were minted. This type was designed by John R. Sinnock, who also designed the Roosevelt dime. The Franklin half was almost our first half to not show the eagle, but Gilroy Roberts made the small eagle on this half dollar. The eagle on the Franklin half is only about % inch tall. The main design on the reverse is the Liberty Bell which also appears on the 1926 half dollar commemorating the 150th anniversary of independence. Ben Franklin was the first actual person to be shown cn a United States half dollar. The Franklin half was last minted in 1963.In 1964 the first Kennedy halves were made. Only the 1964 issues are 90 per cent silver. In 1965 they were replaced by the 40 per cent silver half dollars. The Kennedy half was designed by Gilroy Roberts-Obverse and the reverse side was designed by Frank Gas-mint sets.
