Maj. Anthony Talks to ClassFormer Cadet Commandant Discusses Air Corps For Journalism Students“A bomber crew is like a big league team, for each man is dependent on the other,” said Major James Coleman Anthony, former commandant of the John Marshall Corps of Cadets, to the journalism class Tuesday a week ago.Although in the Army Air Corps, Major Anthony does very little actual flying and holds a stationary post at Mitchell Field, New York, where many foreign plans come in.‘Mitchell Field has an ideal location on Long Island,” said the Major. “It was named for the mayor of New York during the First World War.”Major Anthony spent a good while at Miami Beach, Florida before going to Mitchell Field.“It’s remarkable how the Army in such a short time made the huge base at Miami,” related the visitor. “Hotels were leased by the government and served as barracks for as many as three or four squadrons,” he stated. The experienced officer went on to tell of the schedule the boys must follow and how hard they must study in order to pass their classes.“Among the subjects taught to the students are life saving and swimming under fire,” recalled Major Anthony.“The boys also have two hours each day of physical training, regardless of the weather,” said the speaker. The air corps is the most flexible one of the services, and it accepts new ideas much more quickly than the others, according to the officer from Mitchell Field.
