TUESDAY, MAY 10,2011Can Silas beCharlotteluckycharm again?CHARLOTTE (AP) — The Charlotte Bobcats have a minuscule chance of moving into the top three in next week’s NBA draft lottery. But coach Paul Silas has overcome long odds before — and owner Michael Jordan is sending him to Secaucus, N.J., on May 17 in hopes he can serve as a similar good luck charm as he did 12 years ago with Charlotte’s former NBA team.“There are a lot of similarities from my first stint as head coach in Charlotte and my current tenure with the Bobcats,” Silas said. “It appears that the stars have aligned again and I’m hoping to pull off something special.”In a nearly identical scenario to this season when he replaced Larry Brown and was later made permanent coach, Silas took over for Dave Cowens early in the 1999 season with the Hornets. He also had his interim tag removed by management and got Charlotte close to the playoffs before coming up short.Silas then went to New Jersey with the Hornets slated to pickSilas13th overall. They had only five chances out of 1,000 to obtain one of4he top three picks. The Hornets proceeded to capture the third pick. They used it on point guard Baron Davis, who became a key component in the backcourt for perennial playoff teams before and after the team moved to New Orleans. It remains the only time since the NBA moved to the current lottery format in 1994 that the team with the best record received one of the top three picks. The Bobcats’ odds are nearly as long after going 34-48. They’re slated to pick ninth overall and have only a 1.7 percent chance to get the first overall pick and less than a 3 percent chance to move into the top three. But Silas is hoping he can do it again.“I truly believe that out of something bad comes something good,” Silas said, “and this lottery can be the start of a long string of good fortune for this team and this city.”Steinbrenner helped FBI before winning pardonSteinbrennerWASHINGTON (AP) — The FBI released documents Monday stating that New York Yankees owner GeorgeSteinbrenner assisted the agency in two investigations — one of them apparently- a terrorism probe — in the years leading up to his pardon by President Ronald Reagan on a campaign-contribu-tions conviction. The Associated Press and other news organizations requested the FBI file under the Freedom of Information Act following Steinbrenner’s death in July. The first release was made last December. The two releases combined totaled about 800 pages. In a newly released 1988 FBI memo, the FBI said that it supports the contention that George Steinbrenner has provided the FBI with valuable assistance.Seven months later, Reagan pardoned Steinbrenner for his convictions in a case involving campaign donations to President Richard Nixon and other politicians. The documents, included inthe second. release of Steinbrenner's FBI file, also show that he blamed his illegal corporate campaign contribution to Nixon on bad legal advice. The memo disclosed Monday described one probe in which Steinbrenner assisted as an undercover operation that ultimately led to an arrest, prosecution and conviction. The FBI described the other investigation simply as a sensitive security matter. The FBI deleted all specifics about the probes before releasing the bureau's file on Steinbrenner, who died last year.A separate FBI document identifies the cases as two national security matters and says Steinbrenner assisted the bureau from 1978 lo 1983.A1987 letter by Steinbrenner’s lawyers about his assistance to the FBI says that the Yankees owner knows that he placed the lives of his family and himself in jeopardy through being involved in a terrorist matter.See PARDON, 2B
