Former Mayor Bentley then administered the oath of offloe to the reoently eleoted mayor, A. W. Riordan, who in torn administered the oath to the members of the new ooonoil. The following ap pointments whioh had been made by him were then ratified by the ooonoil;City Aaditor: LeRoy C. Eastman.City Attorney: Frank A. Little.City Engineer: 8. A- Calhoun.Chief of Polioe: Geo. U. MoCraoken.Night Marshal: John Akers.The following committees on oity affairs was appointed by Mayor Riordan: Street and alley; J. II. Glllea pie, Emil Hargens, 8. G. Evans. Fire and polioe: L. E. Highley, 8 O. Evans, F. D. Hummel. Auditing: J. L. Mar-ooux, Emil Hargens, O. T. C. Lollioh. Water and Light: W. P. Phillips, L. E Highley, J. H. Gillespie.One of the first matters to be re ferred to the new oounoil by the mayor was that of the water and light franchise whioh was discussed at some length and finally referred to the water and light oommittee for investigation.The oounoil then adjourned to meet May 13th.A very pleasant surprise was tend ered the members of the oounoil and those present at the olose of the meeting by Mrs. A. W. Riordan, assisted by Mrs. W. E. Reeder and Mrs. E. 8. Ames in the way of an elegant lunoh eon. It was a oomplete surprise and a very pleasant one for all oonoerned.BROTHERHOOD BANQUETMethodist Men Have Feast at the Gillespie in Celebration of Their Organization,The men of the Methodist ohurob to the number of about fifty, bad a do ligbtful evening at the Gillespie hotel Tuesday the oooaslon being in oelebra-tion of the recent organization of the Methodist Brotherhood a social and working organization within the male attendants of the M. E. ohurob. At this banquet mine host Fargo served the following simple, but well served and heartly relished meuu: Consomme sweet plokles, young onions, radishes,prime ribs of beef, brown gravy, leg of lamb, umyonnatse, cold roast pork, banana fritters, crystal sauoe, mashed potatoes, French peas, Parker peas, Parker House rolls, Lemon Sherbet, Fruit jelly, Assorted oake, ooffee. teaFollowihg the banquet whioh was an hour of merriment and good followship , all repaired to the parlors where after 1 an appropriate prayer by Rev. Dr. George Clark pastor of Sawyer avelt; M. E. ohuroh of Chioago. Toastmaster Clifford A. The toasts were interspersed with vooal solos by Bernard Vessey, a son of the governor cf the state both he and Paul Calfee beiug delightful entertainers in their res-peotlvo lines. The speakers each held the oloscst attention of all present, glviLg thoughtful, helpful and happy ideas along the various themes discussed, the ohief and priuoipal thought advanced beiug The Fatherhood of , God and the Brotherhood of Man, and , best to advauoe it.Fraternity—brotherly esteem aud helpfulness to eaoh other—means muob in life and truly if there is auy society organization In whioh suoh desirable qualities should be cultivated it is within the ohurob. Religion is supposed to include that and if properly applied does mean it, but in this oold aud busy world, where the paramount inclination seems to be every man for himself, it is well to pause long enough occasionally to ask ourselves if we are fraternal, social and sociable enough for our own good and for the good of humauity. This ‘ Brotherhood idea is a good one and Is worthy of boosting.JAY CRANE FOR SHERIFF.Withdraws From Commissioner Fight to Enter the Field as Candidate for Sheriff.Thinking that if eleoted to the offloe of sheriff of this oounty that he oould serve the voters to a better advantage than iu the oapaoity of oommissioner, Jay Crane withdrew bis oaudidaoy for the last named offloe aud invaded the other Held This move was broaght about by his friends who tbo recognizing his ability and promising him tbeir support as a oandidate for oommissioner felt that be waB better fitted for the offloe of sheriff, and there is not the least doubt in the mind of anyone but that Jay Crsne will make a first class sheriff.He wished the Star at this time how ever to thank bis many friends for their promised support In his first an nonncement and stated that if they oonld oonolentionsly support him for sheriff that It would be appreciated and that if eleoted he wonld care for the duties of the offloe to the best of his ability.
