By MARGARET LEVRA Globe Staff Writer Mercer librarian Ali Mondroski will be retiring from her position of 34 years on Oct. 1. Saturday Special She won't be leaving her post until Oct. 1 “because I want to work in this new location for one year,” she said. The new Mercer Library is located on Margaret Street, adjacent to the new com munity center. Mondroski began her librarian career in 1964, in Mercer's origi nal library, which is now the reading room of the new library. The original library was started by the Mercer Women’s Club in 1939-40 Mondroski said. The first librarian was Marguerite Karow. “It was a one-room li brary. The Women’s Club began collecting books and put up shelves. The library grew to a point where the town had to take it over. That was on May 28, 1956,” she said. The library board was created at that time. Recalling her days in the origi nal library, Mondroski said, “It was interesting and fun. We didn’t have any washrooms, and it was cold. It was a cold room. “At one time we had a cat mas cot. It was a stray cat that came in. It would sit on my desk in front of the window and growl at any car that drove by. The people really enjoyed that one room. It was cozy.” The library moved to the town hall between 1984-85. Mondroski said, “It was still in one room.” But the town added to the build ing, giving the library a little more space. The additional room allowed for two computers and a television. “We continued adding books. And, it was cluttered and crowded over there.” Then, on Oct. 1, “we moved to our new site off Margaret Street. This is great. It is so inviting and spacious. And,...all these win dows,” she said, noting “We only had one window in the door ‘in the old building. “It is exciting for people coming in. They've got room to browse and room to read,” she added. A move into the new library al lowed for the ongoing addition of volumes, especially in the refer ence section.
