West Virginia's Mother of the Year is Mrs. E. Forrest Jones, mother of four. All of her children are in graduate school. Ruth Ellen will receive her mas ter’s degree in journalism from Columbia University this year. Estill Forrest Jones is a law student at West Virginia Universi ty after graduating with a degree in politi cal science from the University of Virgin ia. Frances Madeline Jones will enter the school of dentistry at West Virginia Univ ersity specializing in children’s orthodon tia Florence Thompson Jones will receive a master’s degree in business administra tion from the University of North Caroli na. Frances and Florence are twins. All the children agreed that the chief characteristics of their mother was “a de mand for excellence. “Mother took us every place she went: to visit the legislature, or touring histori cal sites. She wanted us to become in volved in the community. “We appreciate her more now, but at times past we've sometimes thought: ‘Why can’t she settle for playing bridge in stead of having us involved with her in all those activities?’ “And while we were away at school, we would receive envelopes stuffed with clip pings from the Charleston newspapers. She wanted us to keep up with what was going on in town, and not become stran gers, the children added. Mrs. Jones attended the Bicentennial awards dinner of the American Mothers Committee, Inc., Wednesday at the Shore ham Americana Hotel in Washington, Mr. and Mrs. Jones (he is executive vice presi dent of West Virginia Steel Corp.) are members of the Baptist Temple. The application submitted by her chil dren to the American Mothers Committee in support of her nomination as state mother of the year lists four single-spaced typewritten pages of ‘‘activities and con tributions of nominee.” Here are some of the organizations she has devoted time and talent to: Cabin Creek Quilts, Alderson-Broaddus College, the Baptist Temple, Bicentennial Com mission, Marshall University, Kanawha Valley Historical and Preservation Socie ty, International Christian University Foundation, Inc., Sunrise, Belmont Gar den Club, Women’s Committee of Charles ton Symphony Orchestra, Charleston Rose Society, Daughters of the American Revo lution, United Daughters of the Confedera cy, Charleston General and Memorial Hospital auxiliaries, American Associa tion of University Women, Eastern Star, Women’s Democratic Club, American Cancer Society, West Virginia Council of Churches, United Churchwomen. YWCA, Goodwill Industries. Member of a pioneer Kanawha Valley family (she is a descendant of William Mortis, first settler) she graduated from Marshall University and has a master's degree from Columbia University.
