From The Montgomery County Bureau Underprivileged children will no longer be sent by the Mont gomery County Welfare Depart ment to Camp Echo Lake, 11 miles west of Frederick. Welfare Board Chairman La wrence W. Shaw said yesterday that the Board decided that we could no longer send children to a camp where a policy of segre gation continued. The privately owned camp, which begins its 13th annual summer program in the Catoc tin Mountains this year has been serving about 240 Mont gomery County children. It has previously held two 14 day sessions for white chil dren and one session for Negro children of equal duration. President Frederick G. Hart ing said that one reason the policy has not changed is that, no group has submitted a for mal request to end segregation. “If somebody from our coun ty does ask, we'll listen,” he said. “We don't want to change because of the newspapers,”’ he added. Montgomery County schools, Health Department, and Juve nile Court plan to continue to recommend children to the camp this year.
