INDIANAPOLIS?—A’‘ homesick boy started out to hike to Michigan Thursday and wound up leading police on an hours-long wild goose chase. Jack Cottrell, 11-year-old sixth grader, had hiked eight miles across the city when he aroused suspicion by asking how to get to the road to Noblesville. He told a sad story to Sheriff's Capt. Morris Settles—he’d become separated from his mother in a downtown store and was walking home to Noblesville, 22 miles away. The sympathetic captain took him home and gave him a dinner, then took him to Noblesville. He hadn't lived there long, the boy said, but he gave a detailed de scription of the house. He sat on the edge of the car seat while Capt. Settles and Noblesville po lice searched three hours for such a house. They finally came back to In dianapolis, and Jack’s story held up until his aunt, Mrs. Vernon Bunch, called. He had left for school Thursday morning but hadn't come home. “IT lied,” he said with a grin. “I was homesick. I wanted to see my mommy and my three sisters in Niles, Michigan.” “When he said that, I couldn't scold him,’ Capt Settles said. The boy said his mother, Mrs. Mary Cottrell, had sent him to stay with the aunt in Indianapolis because he and a 14-year-old boy in Niles were picked up in a stolen car rier.
