Death of Mr William Ellis.An old and respected identity in the person of Mr William Ellis passed away on Saturday last. He had been in ill-health for several years (heart trouble; and his demise was not unexpected. Fifty years 1 ago Mr Ellis arrived in South Australian waters in the ship “ Kirk-hatn, and left the vessel at the Semaphore. From there he went to Goolwa, where he worked for , some time with Capt Johnson on the trading boats along the Murray. In January, 1878, he was married at Mt. Gambier. He arrived in Port Augusta in 1880 and was the contractor for Messrs Young and Gordon, barging goods across the gulf. In 1884 Capt. Melville was harbor pilot. At that period shipping was brisk and it was found necessary to appoint a second pilot, and Mr Ellis was selected to fill the position. In 1902 (on the transfer of t Mr F. Clark) he received promotion to harbormaster and was also appointed marine underwriters' surveyor, both positions be retained up to the time of his death. Mr Ellis was possessed of a generous nature, was jocular and most obliging, and , could relate many happenings (both seafaring and otherwise) of bygone days of Port Augusta. He leaves a widow, three sons and three daughters and nine grand children. He was born in Greenwich, London, sixty nine years ago. The obsequies took place on Sunday afteiuoon, the cortege being followed by many friends of the deceased. Members of the Flinders Masonic Lodge, of which Mr Ellis was a member, were in attendance and each dropped a sprig of acacia into the grave of the departed brother.Lodge of Sorrow.The Flinders Masonic Lodge will hold a Lodge of Sorrow in the | Masonic Hall next Sunday afternoon at 3.30.
