The city was somewhat shocked Thursday atternoon to hear of the ■death of Mrs. Lucy Carter, wife of Abel Carter, which occurred about ■six o’clock Thursday evening. Her•c *death was the result of an overdose of opium taken in a moment of temporary aberration of mind, caused by extreme pains to which she was subject at times. The fact that she had been thus poisoned was not discovered until several hours had eiapsed and then restoratives were of no avail, although everything was done to relieve her system from the effects of the subtile drug. She is an old resident of Greene county having come here over 30 years ago with her husband, and was esteemed and highly respected by all her acquaintances. She is the mother of Mr. E. H. Carter of this city, and had she lived until next August, would have been 67 years of age. The funeral will be held at her late residence this (Saturday) afternoon at 3, o’clock and the interment made in tr.e Jefferson cemetery. Appropriate obituary next week.
