By JOHN RADTKE Daily Herald Sports Writer There’s a youth movement going on with Larkin’s varsity softball team. With the promotion of sopho mores Kyle Yore and Stacy Frank to the varsity late last week, coach Larry Hight now starts four sopho mores and a junior. Sophomores Salina Hattendorf and Bree Klux dal have been on the varsity all sea son and junior Stacy Nagel is a mainstay of the Yore, an infielder, has played shortstop and second base since being moved up to the varsity while Frank had patrolled center field. Hattendorf has moved to right and Kluxdal plays either third or short. “We just felt we needed to bring these kids up and give them a shot,” Hight said last Saturday at Burlington Central. “They'll be up the rest of the season.’ It certainly can’t hurt the Royals defensively. Through 20 games, Larkin had made 58 errors. For the second year in a row, Larkin lost to Burlington Central last Saturday. It’s never easy for a Class AA school to take a loss from a Class A school, but Burlington’s longstanding reputa tion as one of the best Class A pro around made it a little better for Larkin coach Larry Hight. “(Burlington) plays everybody we and I don’t mind playing them as long as they have the schedule they’ve got,” Hight said after the Royals’ 5-2 loss to Central. “I wouldn’t want to be the only Class AA school on their schedule but as long as they stay competitive and = fap “They're nice people out here and a lot of these kids play with each other in the summer.” To witness, this coming summer, Burlington star pitcher Heather Wendt will play for the Elgin Heat 18 under fastpitch team along with, among others, Larkin stars Stacy Nagel, Becki Steffan and Natalie DeMoulin. And another reason: Hight had one other thought about travel ing west to play at Burlington. “They’ ve got these nice new dugouts,” the softball or No varsity softball program in District U46 currently dugouts at its softball field but don’t think Burlington passed a referendum or anything to get its new digs. The Rockets’ dugouts came pri marily from a donation of materials and labor by assistant coach Rick Lowitzki. A contractor in his real life, Lowitzki donated more than $4,000 worth of materials and labor for the construction of the dugouts and ABC Supply of Mundelein donated the 7 Burlington is also in the process of fencing in its field, with much of the materials for that project donated by Gene Westphal, whose son Scott plays on the Rockets’ baseball team.
