A charge of assisting a criminal was filed today in Bartholomew Circuit Court against Jimmy W. Smith, 24, Columbus, in connection with the flight back to Arkansas of Lyndale Ivy, 22, and Teresa West, 17, who are charged with the double murder of E. J. and Faye Shasteen southwest of Westport last Jan. 30. Smith was arrested at 4 p.m. Saturday by State Police Detective Sgt. Jon Oldham, chief investigator in the cases, and State Trooper Don Spurgeon. Authorities said their in vestigation revealed that Ivy, an Arkansas prison parolee, and Miss West stayed with Smith at his residence at 318 Jewell St. in Columbus the night after the staying, adding that Ivy also made several telephone calls from Columbus to someone in Arkansas after that night. Ivy was a former resident of Columbus, where he had a record of juvenile offenses, and was on an Arkansas parole travel permit to Indiana at the time the murders occurred. He reportedly admitted his involvement in the slaying while in jail at Wynne, Ark., on a burglary convention and subsequently implicated Miss West, identified as his girlfriend by police. Indiana authorities went to Arkansas last Wednesday, obtained signed statements from the pair along with ex tradition waivers and returned them to Jennings County jail at Vernon Thursday night. The two are to be arraigned in Judge Joseph Carson’s court this week after consultation with their pauper counsel, appointed at a preliminary hearing Friday afternoon.
