It is dedicated to combating discrimination and promoting equal opportunities for minorities in such areas as education, public accommodations, employment, and housing.The council, which has a sister chapter in Tucson, is credited with a prominent role in the desegregation of schools in Arizona, the enactment of a “Little FEP”— a state law prohibiting discrimination in public employment — and other minority gains.“UNFORTUNATELY,” said Ely, “during the past year or so Civic Unity here in Phoenix has become almost completely inactive. Yet there are still a lot of jobs to do. We must get a public accommodations law passed to protect minorities from discrimination in restaurants, resorts, hotels, motels, and so on. We must drive for an FEPC and anti-housing-dlscrimination legislation.
