In addition to his FEPC function and his Jewish Labor Committee leadership, he is executive secretary of the Los Angeles Committee of Equal Employment Opportunities and executive director of the Los Angeles Conference on Immigration and Citizenship.Herbert Ely, Phoenix attorney, is chairman of a special steering committee which is arranging the H reorganization meeting.CIVIC UNITY is an inter-racial, e I inter-religious organization which“To get started again on these things, we need a thoroughgoing reorganization, bringing in new blood, new leadership, a new sense of purpose and direction. It is dedicated to combating discrimination and promoting equal opportunities for minorities in such areas as education, public accommodations, employment, and housing.The council, which has a sister chapter in Tucson, is credited with a prominent role in the desegregation of schools in Arizona, the enactment of a “Little FEP”— a state law prohibiting discrimination in public employment — and other minority gains.“UNFORTUNATELY,” said Ely, “during the past year or so Civic Unity here in Phoenix has become almost completely inactive. Yet there are still a lot of jobs to do. We must get a public accommodations law passed to protect minorities from discrimination in restaurants, resorts, hotels, motels, and so on. We must drive for an FEPC and anti-housing-dlscrimination legislation.
