R. 4967).The accompanying substitute bill baa been drawn in eomformtty to the sag- I gestions of the Secretary of the Ireaa «rv. and meets wiih bia approval.H th Seattle and l aooma are thriving and Important commercial towns upon Puget Bound, the “Mediterranean of the Pacific,’* which has an inland shore of 1*N miles, is entirely clear of reefs, bars and rooks, and is navigable everywhere by the largest ocean vessels. The shipping of the Pu .et S*»und customs district exceeds that of foor-fiftha of the customs districts in the I nited States, having a documented tonnage of ovlt; r 40.(XX) tons. During the last fiscal year the number and tonnage *f vessels entered and oleared in the for eign trage aggregated 1314 vessels and tons, and was exceeded by only eight ports in the I uited State*. The volume of the ooasting trade ts estimated to be twice as large. in* amount of customs revenue collected has increased from flH,448.m in 1690 to t7*V£?1.05 In I *lt;3. _The great balk of the exports and imports entering into this commerce is received and discharged at Item two t wu*. Tacoma is the western tar mi tius of the Northern Pacific Railroad, a transeoniineutal line, while Seattle is connected with this line by one owned by a separate company. The latter t«»wn is situated about 50 miles and the former about 90 mile* from Purl Town send, the port of entry of th* district.
