Girls' Track Team Is Winner Of RegionalBy MABEL COLLINSHarlan's Girls’ Track Team carried off the regional meet yesterday in Barbourville and qualified for seven events in the state tournament to be held next week in Ix»xington.The young team, with the majority competing for the first time, sailed by Lynn Camp by winning the last four out of five events. Harlan piled up 48 points while Lynn Camp was second with 41MuFleming Neon placed to third with 24 points. Others were Williamsburg 22; Corbin, 20; Bush, 6; and St. Camillas, 3Mi.“It was a great team effort from a bunch of determined girls.” Mrs. Louis Green Jr., coach of the team, said after the meet. “Our girls are very young but they gave it a terriffic try and came through,” she added. It was the first time on the track for most of them.E R. Gray, coach of the boys track team, assisted Mrs. Green, and remarked that the boys team have a big job to do today in the regional meet to keep up with the girls. They left this morning for qualifying events and will compete this afternoon.The girls fell behind in pointsin the field events early but overcome a lot of bad breaks. Mona McDaniels suffered a spiked heel as she finished second in the 440 dash.Freshman Donna Walker, who does all events well, brought home four first place medals, l ast year she placed second in the 75 yard dash in the state meet Her time was 9 4. Yesterday she ran it in 9.0 flat.Donna also won the long jump with a leap of 17’ Vi”. She won the 50 yard dash in 6.3 and was a member of the 440 relay team that finished first. Anna Jo Robinson placed second in the 50.Harlan’s relay team ran it in 57. In addition to Walker, others are Joyce Turner, Lori Rhodes and Robinson. The 880 medley took a first also in 2:15.5. Running it were Robinson, Delores Mitchell, Turner and Gardenia Curley.Curley led the field in the 440 dash in 1:13.55 while Mona McDaniels was close second. Robinson’s winning time in the 220 was 28.55.
