AM MONORIPPING WETfSAYS POLLBig Majority in LiteraryDigest Poll Favor Absolute RepealFigures released today by the. Literary Digest in its great national prohibition poll indicate that Hammond can safely be added to the throng of cities which are decidedly opposed to the existing liquor laws. Of 1,723 votes received from Hammond up to date, S43 favored absolute repeal, 577 favored modification, and 303 believed enforcement of the present laws was the only solution.Figured in percentage terms, 40.82 per cent of the Hammond votes are for repeal, 33.52 per cent for modification, and 17.56 per cent for enforcement. The present figures, however, are the result of an incomplete analysis and the poll officials do not want them construed as final, but it is safe to say that the final figures will not. be vastly different from those released today. The Digest has made a practice of releasing no reports until numerous checks have been made.AHammond's total for repeal is one of the highest yet to be recorded in the national poll, Several cities in New Jersey have recorded repeal totals that were vastly higher, but the average for cities of Hammond's size has been several notches lower. If the city's estimated population of 70,000 voted similarly on the question, 34.244 of the votes would be for repeal, 23,464 for modification and 12,292 for enforcement. On the basis of present figures it can be estimated that 82.44 per cent of Hammond’s estimated population, or 57,70S persons, would vote either for repeal or modification of the existing laws. There is, however, much division of opinion throughout the United Stntes on wether modification votes are to be construed as wet or dry. Proponents and opponents of the ISth amendment both lay claim to the thousands of ballots which register for modification. Were the modification and enforcement votes to be totaled forHammond they would equal SS0 or►51.08 per cent of the total vote. If the total estimated population voted proportionally on the question, 35,-756 ballots could be counted by the dry advocates. The margin over the combination of absolute repeal votes would be 1,512.p:hitcvlt;I ei
