STEVE PEKR1 FOUND iil'ILTY OF MURDEK.Mr. H. Steve Perry, who shot and killed N. B. Lanier some time ago in the court house at Decatur, was tried for his life in DeKalb county last week, and was found guilty of murder and sentenced to hang by the neck until dead on the 21st of this month.Perry will not hang then, as application has been made for a new trial, and the hearing will not take place till after that date.Colonels Richard B. Russell of Winder and Tyler M. Peeples of Law^enceville are the attorneys for Mr. Perry, and they will use every endeavor to get a new trial, and, finally to get a verdict of acquittal, if a new trial is granted.Perry’s statement of the cause of the killing is that Lanier assaulted his wife.Lanier’s dying statement was that Perry spent a portion of his time at bagnios with the strumpets of Collins street, and that Mrs. Perry begged him to tell her where Mr. Perry spent the early part of a number of nights, and after long persuasion he told her, with a strict promise never to tell Mr. Perry who told her; but she told him, and for this Lanier says Perry shot him. He denied ever having assaulted or attempting to assault Mrs. Perry.In this case the jury could find no other verdict except murder under the Judge’s charge. He charged the jury to either aequit Perry or find him guilty of murder, and to discard Perry’s statement, as he had ample time to reflect between the time when he alleged that the assault was committed and the man killed.The jury brought in a verdict of murder. The verdict was no surprise, after reading the Judge’s charge.
