Pastor’s PointLife after EasterBY REV. BERT BAETZSt. Mark's EpiscopalI recently overheard an imaginary conversation between two unborn twins. The twins in the womb of their mother went back andforth about whether or not there was life after birth.“Do you actually believe in life after birth?’1 the one twin asks.“Yes, definitely! Inside we grow and are prepared for what will come outside”, answered the other twin. “I believe that’s nonsense!” says the first. “There can't be1 life .after birth - what is that supposed to look like?”“I don’t exactly know either,” answered the other twin, “But therewill certainly be much more light than in here.”In this time after Easter Sunday, we might consider a similar question: do we believe in life after Easter? On the most important day of the Christian calendar, Easter Sunday, we are assured of life after death. On the first day of the week, we discover the tomb to be empty. We find that Christ has been raised from dead. But what then? What’s next? What does life look like after Easter? In the gospel of John, on a number of occasions the risen Jesus shows up to surprise the disciples that there will be life after Easter. It’s after Easter when the disciples went back to fishing, and without an invitation, Jesus shows up along the beach. They weren’t having much luck with catching fish until Jesus tells them where to cast, and then they were not able to haul intheir nets because they had caught so many fish.On the evening of the first Easter, the disciples didn’t have a clue what to do next. They were confused. They were scared.. They locked themselves in a room. And then Jesus breaks into the locked, room and says, “Peace be with you.”In Luke’s gospel, after Easter, there were two men who could only mourn the fact that their messiah had died. Then, in the breaking of the bread, the men’s eyes are opened and they see that they are eating with the risen. Jesus. The risen Jesus breaks into locked rooms. He’s in the breaking of the bread. He breaks onto the scene when we least expect it. This is life after Easter. We at St. Mark's recently brokeground for our new education and preschool building. We did so because we are more like the twin who believes... We believe there will certainly be “more light” in our life after Easter. We at St. Mark’s would like to think our breaking ground was really one more time in which Jesus breaks into this life .after Easter. We believe in a future where the risen Jesus will break into the lives of the children, youth, and adults served by the mission and ministry of our church. For every Christian, there is much more to come. We will only be wonderfully surprised by the one who loves to break into this life after Easter.Rev. Bert Baetz is the pastor at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Richmond.
