The ScoopBy Dave Larson Sports EditorAs tlit? baseball season heads into its final two weeks, it appc likely that Richmond will, at worst, tie for first place in the South Conference.Considering that the Spiders have no full scholarships, play 01 terrible field, nave a new coach, lost two outstanding SC players fr last year, and wete predicted to have a weak pitching staff, their I! (11-3 SC) mark is outstanding. That Richmond has done so \ this year points to a fact that many people overlook in nnaly-2 athletic teams. This intangible of immeasurable Importance is te unity and leadership.Coach Chuck Boone, himself a leader, has often said that the seniors on this year’s squad have done a remarkable job of lead the team in every category. We wouldn't he in first place i! wasn't lor some of these guys. The team is a close unit and the seni keep us together.Next year Richmond will or should have another great tram, it will he very difficult to replace Reggie Dunnavant, Al Selby, Ri ard Bing, Donnie Walsh, Los Keenan, and Tommy Northnm, v will graduate this June.Of the six seniors the best known probably arc All-SC shorts Dunnavant and lefty pitcher Selby. Both players along with Nortl were elected tri-captains this year and both are sure bets to hr numerous all-time Richmond records.Selby, a 5-10 senior, is married and lives in Richmond. lie has b a starting pitcher for the Spiders for each of his four years, lifetime record is 13-14, hut many of his losses have been by and 2*1 scores. This year Selby is 4-2 with one loss being a two-hitter against The Citadel. With at least three more starts Selby hopes to get his career rec over ..r)00. He also would like to set a few all-time Spider rcco In his career Selbv has started 30 games, and pitched in 34. carter record is 311 set by Charlie Revere from 1950*61. Mis 21 innings pitched is second only to Dick Baldcrson’s 237^3 from l( lifl. Another outstanding aspect of Selby's career is his cummula 2.58 earned run average. It is quite possible that Reggie Dunnavant is the most valu; player in the SC. Roger Hatcher may be a close second. In f years, Dunnavant is bitting over .312, and has been an all confcrc player twice, and he certainly will be All-SC this year.Dunnavant, from Victoria, was elected almost unanimously as a captain. He is a great team leader, and has been called invnlunl by Coach Boone. With about 10 games remaining he only needs lilts to break Bwcky Luck's 106 career-hit record, set in 1953-56. only needs 15 at hats to break the most-at-bats in a enrrer marl 292. also set by Luck.Walsh, a speedy, underrated outfielder from Richmond, has a f year hatting average of .330. Me has always been among the tea leading hitters, and is one of the top competitors on the team fits of rage and disgust when he makes an out or error indicate dcfinatc will to win. Like the other seniors, Walsh is happy with progress of the team and like the other seniors will he difficult replace next year.Summing up the feelings of his teammates, outfielder Les Kee said, Coach Boone is more than a coach. He is a friend to players, and has helped make this such a good year. Kecnar pmior college transfer from Fcrrum, has had an outstanding sea: lie is the leading extra base hitter on the team with three doul two triples and two long homers.Kecn.m, from Chester, has rapped five triples in two yi and is one of the teams leading base runners. Me is also an excel fielder A mninr in rrmnnirement. lie would like 10 enter some rt
