The hot sun blazed down on the Memorial Park cinder track and a feeble wind blew across it just enough to raise an irritating dust. It was a Sunday afternoon and a lone figure, clad only in white shorts and blue track shoes, walk ed solemly across the running track in the large stadium. The figure appeared somewhat small and insignificant compared to the vastness inside the walls of the lonely, deserted athletic field. _ The figure was Tom Kendall, a standout performer for the Jeff ersonville High School track team, Kendall was working out on his own this hot afternoon. Last Friday ,at the South Central Con ference track meet in Blooming ton, Kendall was beaten for the first time this season in the 400 yard dash. Ron Dougherty of Franklin tied the SCC meet re cord in beating Kendall with a :50.4 clocking. The determination in Kendall’s ‘face as he worked out made it evident that the gutty senior did not accept the defeat lightly. Ken dall, who is a four-year letterman for the Red Devils, was getting ready for the IHSAA Track and Field Sectional at Seymour next Friday night. He won the 440 in last year’s sectional as a junior with a time of 51.5. In order for Kendall to get to the state meet, he must finish in the first three in the sectional and in the regional. The Seymour Sectional winners will go to the Blooming ton Regional, along with the sec tional qualifiers from Evansville, Terre Haute and Bloomington.
