INDIAN NAME FOR NEW TOWNWahpeton Will Include Iowa Lake Section Splitfrom We*t Okoboji*Arnolds Park, la. — (Special) — 'Wahpeton, the name of a friendly Sioux Indian chieftain, has been selected as pie name of a new town being organized on the west shore of West Okoboji lake. The chief's two sons were reputedly the friendly Yellow Medicine Indians who purchased Mrs, William Marble from-captivity in the Inkpaduta band of Indians after the massacre here in March, 1857. The Indian meaning of the name is village or people dwelling in the leaves/'The name was suggested by Emily Barnett of Des Moines, after a search of historical records. It was considered mo6t appropriate by the . residents of the new town and will', be offered at the election for incorporation to be May 27.Wahpeton will include a lakeshore strip north Irom Emerson’s bay to* EgraJharve on the west shore of West Okoboji lake. It will Include the national Y. W. C. A. camp, the* Crescent Beach hotel, the West Okoboji Golf and Country dub, Miller's bay hotel, Lakeside laboratory, and both Manhattan beaches.The court order permitting occasion from the Incorporated town of West Okoboji was signed April. 17 and immediate steps taken by the residents of the territory to perfect organization of a new town. Plans for the future of West Okoboji, which now comprises Terrace park and a strip east and' west of that place, have not been announced.
