The chief's two sons were reputedly the friendly Yellow Medicine Indians who purchased Mrs, William Marble from-captivity in the Inkpaduta band of Indians after the massacre here in March, 1857. The Indian meaning of the name is village or people dwelling in the leaves/'The name was suggested by Emily Barnett of Des Moines, after a search of historical records.
