Smith, who from 1S98 to 1909, was' the proprietor of Smith's theatre, on Main street, nowknown as thetf^ark theatre, tneaThe Smith theatre was the flr-t to adopt the iDOlicy of two shows a week at the then popular prices of 10. 20 and 30 cents, even for the bett*?r melodramas and musical shows which carried some of the favorites of those days. Mr. Smith purchased the lease for the second floor of the Barnum Recreation building, from the Belknap Theatret company and in 1901 remodeled the house and put the theatre on the first floor of the building.In 1909. because of 111 healeh. he sold the lease to Ira W. Jackson. of New London. In 1910 It was again sold to the Shea Amusement company.Mr. Smith was formerly musical artist in vaudeville but when his health became Impaired he went to Boson to reside at the home of a niece.
