THE RIVER RAPIDS. Continuation of Improvements on the Mississippi and Illinois, An Outline of Col Macomb's Work for the Coming Season, THE ARMHOPNIATIONS. On Monday last Col. M. Macomb, of the Engineer corps, United States Army, in charge of the improvement of the Upper Mississippi river, below St. Paul, the Des Moines and Rock Ieland Rapids, and the Minois river, received official notice that the remainder of the appropriations are now available. These appropriations are in the River and Barbor Billet August 14th, 1876, but were not made available un til last week, by Secretary of War McCrary, with the sanction of President Anges. With a knowlege of this action a representative of the Gazette called upon Col. Macotb at his office yesterday afternoon and was courteously furnished the outline of the Present sesson's work,on which active operations will soon be resumed. DES MOINES RAPIDS. During 1881 season much work was done in excavating prism of canal, building lock water, finishing the masonry of the stard, rock, and excavating rocks at Montrose chain. This work consumed one-half of we appropriation of August 14, 1876, leaving a remainder of $150,000 for this years’ work. Major A. Stickney, corpa of engineers,is the local superintendent of this work. During the summer it is ex pected that locks will be completed so that Dosly may pass through this season, but it will require at least another year to add the finishing touches to the work. HOCK ISLAND RAPIDS. The amount now made available for this work is $15,000. During last season the work done here consisted in the removal of 2340 cubic yards of rock at Lower Chain and 305 cuble yards at St. Louis Chain. ‘The work closing the improve ment consists of excavating 2,500 cubic yards of work at the foot of Moline Chain. The operations are in charge of Major E. F. Hoffman, Assistant Engineer. All that remains to complete this improvement, ac cording to the original project ie the ex cavation named above at Moline Chain meet the head of the Island. ‘This will be done by chisel and dredge The small quantity of rock and the great velocity of the current at that point render the con struction of a coffer dam in expedient. This work will probably be finished in another year. LILLINOIS RIVER. The project for continuing the work of improving the river by credging and build ing dams, jetties and trailing walls was successfully carried on last summer, but not entirely completed, owing to suspen sion of work caused by long continuance of floods in the river. The amount now available is $30,000. The work is in local charge of R.A. Brown, Assistant Engineer. The Government work during the last three sessons has given great satisfaction to steamboat men. The system of closing up alde chutes of contracting the width of the river by brush and stone dams, supple mented by dredging, has proved very suc cessful, and difficult portions of the river have been greatly benefitted ,thereby. Both chute will be a prominent objective point this season. TRE ITPEB MISSISSIPPI The available appropriation for im proving the Upper Mississippi this season is $20,000. Charles W. Durham, of Rock Island, Asistant Bncineer, is in local charge. The steamer Montana will be em ployed as heretofore between St. Paul and the mouth of the Illinois River. Her boat is some 700 miles in length; put the prin cipal part of her time will be put in shawe rs Crosse, where most needed. In former years the snags have been removed from the channel and Iesame and overhanging trees removed from the banks in the bends and on the channel side of the river. This policy prevents the accumulation of snags to the channel and at present comparative ly few are met with. In 1866, 1869, 1970 and 1871 about 500 sages were extracted annually, but in 1876 although the river was carefully patrolled from St Paul to Montrose but 36 snags were found. In the future more line will be devoted to the permanent improvement of the bars by stone dams and jetties the construction of i Which in the last two years has proved such a success. IMPROVEMENT OF Tans. Pig's Eye Bar, formerly the worst on the river, now effords a wide channel five feet in depth ot extreme low water. ‘The bar above Ninninger is also greatly improved and it is believed that boats will ‘have no further trouble at this point At Minnegota Istscd the Bar has boat, eradicated by a dam built by the Milwac kes St. Paul Railroad Co. under the direction of Col. Macomb. — ~mere devo in SA. ‘The steamer Montans will stert Sut about the 15th of June, and remain until the close of astigation, or as long as the appropria tions will permit. The Montans has had = g00d overhauling during the winter, and although she is a very old boat, will prob ably be able to do good work for two or three seasons more. Her officers are as follows: Pilot—David Tipton, Nate—Davie Tobin. Engineer—Richard Fengter. In addition to dredging and removing soigs the Montana will probably be able to build dams for the improvement of the river stone or more of the following pets Prescot Island, Newport Bar, Slough, Rollingstone, Beasy Slough, and the head of Lake Pepin. It is proposed to remove the bar or bars which are most troublesome the present season. She will also do some work between Keokuk and the mouth of the Illinois River.
