A release from Iowa U. states Coach Ray Nagel is satisfied with the progress his Iowa football squad is making as it nears the halfway point of spring drills. The Hawkeyes, in most instances, are ahead of where they were in spring practice a year ago. “We're making progress,” says Nagel. “Offensively we are well ahead of last year. Defensively we lack experience and depth, but we still have two weeks to work on our problems in this area.” The offensive chart presently shows 10 lettermen on the first unit. Only sophomore to break through has been Don Osby, a fleet 198- pounder who has taken the split end job left vacant by record-setting Al Bream. The first-string offensive back field is perhaps the best Iowa has fielded in several years, but there is no proven depth at any position except quarterback. The Hawkeyes have two of the finest signal callers in the Big Ten in Larry Lawrence and Mike Cilek, but both are in jured at the moment. Bill Powell has drawn rave notices with his play at tailback. Co-Capt. Tim Sullivan has been his usual reliable rugged self at fullback, and wingback Kerry Reardon has dem onstrated remarkable skill as a pass receiver. The offensive line is solid and enjoys a reasonable amount of depth. It is headed by seniors Jon Meskimen, all-Big Ten in 1968, and Melvin Morris. Another two-year letterman, tackle Paul Laavey, is coming around fast after missing virtually all of last fall with a knee injury. Tight end Ray Manning, who led the Hawkeyes in pass receiving last fall with 35 catches, five for touch downs, looks like he is headed to ward another big season in 1969. The Iowa defensive front appears stronger than a year ago. Veterans occupy the No. 1 end, tackle and linebacking positions. Bill Windauer, a talented 2385-pound sophomore, has taken over the top job at middle guard. The Winfield-Mt. Union high boys track team tied for first place in the Indian Relays at Wapello with the host team Thursday night with 50» points. New London was sixth with 33. Steve Norder of WMU won the 100 yard dash in 10.3 and can on the winning Wolve 880 and mile medley relay teams. The other Wolve firsts were by John Buzbee in the discus, which he tossed 141’6”. Norm Krier of New London won the 880 yard run in 2:09.7 and the mile in 4:50.9. Races are scheduled at 34 Race ways tonight. Time trials starting at 7 pm. The M.V.S.C. races will be at West Liberty tonight.
