24 THE DAILY ARDMOREITE, Ardmore, Okla., Thursday,Inquiring ReporterTheWaylSceltBy MAC Uanti tM«G ALL1ARDHem-roughsouth,screenindil-Television StationSouthern Oklahoma's own television station will soon be a reality. Sometime this summer, about Aug. 1 according to present plans, KVSO-TV will be on the air.I'm glad to see it. Here in Southern Oklahoma we have had to take about the worst in TV reception from the start, med in by distance and by terrain on the north and our pictures on the TV have been good, bad and ferent and there wasn’t much we could do about it.When I went to Oklahoma City, Dallas or somewhere like that and watched TV, I hated to come back home. The reception there was perfect all the time and something to lwllv enjoy. Now v/e are going to have that kind of reception right here in Ardmore and throughout Southern Oklahoma. It has taken a long time. I know that the management of Radio Station KVSO and The Daily Ardmoreite have been working for two or three years to put in a good TV station here, but there are a lot of complications, especially for a station in a relatively small town.Approval must be securedfrom the Federal Communications »Commission in Washington. Prr tests by competing stations musi be heard and disposed of. Location of the transmitter and tower must be cleared with military authorities. Network affiliation must be arranged. And, no small item, it takes an awful lot of money and work. But at last it has all been worked out, and best I can understand the setup from talking to the management, here is the way it will be.KVSO-TV studios construction now in Ardmoreite building, sharing the upstairs with KVSO studios. Localare under The Daily| There was some talk for awhile | that the station here would be a i .satellite” station, a kind of “scc-i ond hand” deal, but that isn't true • at all. It is a locally owned, independent station to render full ser-i vice to Southern Oklahoma, j As I understand it, we willhave a new, and the best, kind of TV station In the first place, we will be doing local programs of all kinds to cover the news and activities of this area. Ardmore and Southern Oklahoma people will be seeing themselves andtheir activities on TV. A generous amount of time will be devoted to public service telecasting. The next step is the state level. A small station such as this can’thave facilities and a crew tocover everything of interest in the whole state. To take care [of this, an arrangement has been made to carry local slate telecasts of WKY-TV, Oklahoma City. Our station can carry WKY 'news and weather, and anything else of interest and benefit in Southern Oklahoma.1Then next is the national and international news and affairs and big network programs. For that, KVSO-TV will have all NBC they want to carry. jThus, although a small-town station, KVSO-TV will have all of the coverage any station could have at all levels. And it will be handled so that all of the programs will be received on ourscreens in perfect shape. We won’t have to be envious of TV viewers in Oklahoma City and Dallas. We talk about KVSO-TV being a small station, but actually I don’t know what a small station would be. I was visiting WBAP-TV in Ft. Worth and found out that we have exactly the same kind and size of studio and transmitter equipment they have, RCA. We will be equipped to transmit NBC color programs. From standpoint of viewers,TV programs can be broadcast there are about 30,000 TV sets inright from the studio, or from movie film and slides taken local-, ly. Later on, both the radio and TV studios will be moved with The Daily Ardmoreite to the new building which will'soon be under construction on the corner of Broadway and “D” northwest. The TV transmitter and tower will be on the Arbuckle Mountains beside Highway 77 north of Ardmore. The old KVSO-FM building and tower on the mountains are being converted for TV use.Of course, location of the tower on top of the mountains makes for good reception over a wide area. The mountain top is four or five hundred feet above the surrounding country. This plus the height , of the tower will give plenty of distance and quality to the . signal.Th engineers say we won’t need more than a pair of “rabbit ears,” or set-top antenna, to get perfect reception here in Ardmore and in other nearby communities. Or for lots of late model sets, not any kind of antenna at all will be required. The good reception is supposed to extend up to about Purcell on the north; Waurika on the west; almost to Atoka on the east; and beyond Gainesville and Sherman on the south. Now as to what status KVSO-TV will have, it will be an independent station affiliated with the National Broadcasting Company network. This is another breakfor us as TV viewers. We haven’t been able to get full NBC service in Southern Oklahoma, but now KVSO-TV will bring to us. us.KVSO-TV coverage area, and almost 300,000 people for our audience. Those numbers don't sound “small” to me.The time schedule will start, they say, on basis of 2:00 p. m. to about 10:30 p. m., and will be increased as rapidly as possible to a full day of telecasting. A full day means fro mabout 6:30 a. m. to 10:30 p. m.I wish we didn't have to wait until midsummer to see KVSO-TV on the air, but the management says it lakes time to get all that extensive layout of equipment. Main item hard to get now is the tower equipment, which has to be specially fabricated at a factory in California.POLITICALANNOUNCEMENTSSubject to the Democratic primary July 3, Run-off primary, July 24.
