Obituary,From the Independence Journal we take the following obituary of Mrs. Lavina Grout, mother of Mrs. L. L, Neeley. The lady died at the Neeley home in Sioux Falls April mh, and funeral services were held at Independence April 10th. The Journal says:Tiie death of Mrs. Lavina Grout occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Minnie Neeley, at Sioux Fails, S. D. Mrs. Grout was one of the early residents of this city and ceased her residence here about titeen years ago. Since that time she has made her home with her several children and had been spending the winter with her daughter, when her death, due to pneumonia, occurred.Lavina Hurtle was born in Weather-field Ohio, September 22, 1835. When a girl of 15 years she removed with her parents to Uliuois. She was twice married, her first husband being Stephen Hustis, of Ottawa. 111. He joined the early gold seeke.'s in Cali-lornia and was killed there in 1851,ller marriage to Mr. Grout occurred at Woodstock, 111., in 1853. They removed to this city soou afterward, where Mr. Grout's death occurred in J80S One child was born by the first marriage, F. A. II ustis, whose death occurred here in 1875. Five children by the second marriage are living as follows: Mrs. Lina 12. Rice of Bemidji, Minn.: Mrs. Laura A. Kingsbury, of Littleton; Mrs. Minnie Neeley, of Sioux Falls, n. I) ; 1j. r. Grout of Cedar Rapids, anti It. A. GruuLof Davenport.The remains were brought here Monday morning and the funeral service was held at the First Baptist church Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock. All of the children and many of t he grand children were present at the final obsequies. Mrs (JiMiit, was a woman of great strength nf character, a quality which she bequeathed to her several children. Alone and practically unaided, she reared hlt;*r chi I'fieri in paths of industry and honor ami lived to see them occupy positions of worth. Her efforts were more than rewarded in the fidelity and love of fine family throughout her life, She possessed an earnest, Christian nature, and wa-* always a devoted member o'* her chosen church Many friends of t:t;• familv will sympathize with them in tlm'n* bereavement.
