Kudos, Mrs. Scribner!BY JOCELYN COOEIGHTH GRADE REPORTERThere are many people in the world who care about children with special needs, but there aren't many who actually do something to make a difference in the lives of these children. We are fortunate at the Dover Middle School to have an educator who does care and believes that children and the needs of these children come first. Her name is Mrs. Linda Scribner, and she was bom in Cohassett, MA, on September 9, 1946.She and her two brothers and sisters grew up in Scituate, MA, which she describes as a lovely little town on the beach. From her parents she learned that it is important to get an education and be independent!Mrs. Scribner attended Scituate Junior High School and Scituate High School. During high school she enjoyed playing field hockey. She also babysat and had a paper route to earn extra money. After she graduated from high school, she attended Quincy Junior College where she majored in Christian education. She went on to graduate in 1984 from the Bangor Theological Seminary where she earned a certificate of Bachelor of Christian Education. In 2002, she earned a Masters in Learning Disabilities from Riviera College. She did not realize that she wanted to be a special educator until she was52 years old. I really wanted to teach children how to read and special education seemed a good place to do that. This is my fifth year in special education. Before coming to the Dover Middle School, Mrs. Scribner taught at Appleton Elementary for 13 and a half years and Nottingham Elementary for three and a half years. At the Dover Middle School, she teaches math, language arts, reading and study skills to fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth graders.Everybody should have a role model, and Mrs. Scribner's role model was the superintendent of her Sunday school. She was a very kind and caring person and had the biggest influence on me. When I have time to myself I love to walk the beach, swim, and read sitting at the shore with the waves coming up over my feet.If she had one wish in her life, it would be that every teacher had enough time to do his or her job the way it needs to be done. Then all children would get a chance to really learn.Alysha, who is in the sixth grade, said, She's a nice teacher, and she is fun. She has taught me how to do division.Elizabeth, another one of herhe Weeksixth eraders said, I like her as a teacher because she teaches us hard words that we don't know. And her aides, Mrs. Dickinson, Ms. Gikas, and Ms. Zucaro, said it best, Linda has approached her new job at Dover Middle School with enthusiasm and professionalism. She is an asset to the field ofspecial education. In spite of the fact that this is the first year for both Linda and her position at Dover Middle School, she has managed to convey her high expectations to all her students. Her flexibility in her new job has made this year a good one for all of us.Kudos, Mrs. Scribner, for making a difference in the lives of special children.Camp Sun 'n Fun sign-ups setDover Recreation would like to announce the sign-up date and times for Camp Sun 'n Fun.
