(Petitions ‘lectors.)•y FRIO HUIIRHOCKEYWITH' HAT HAND is one of hockey’s greatest spectacles, the Stanley Cup playoffs. As last year the Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins are the participants, and for the second consecutive year the Detroit Red Wings are on the sidelines.Red Wing fans find no joy in tha absence of their team from the competition for hockey’s play* off honors. Nor for that matter does anyone even remotely connected with the team. The Stroh hockey network has been stilled for another summer, and is varied voices, scattered like the players whom those voices discussed.Montreal—BostonHowever, to the Montreal-Bos-ton series. This will be a hard, tough competition, unlike last year when Montreal won four of five games, with only stubborn token resistance from the Bruins.Whatever the fourth place Bruins may lack in skill, is more than compensated in toughness. They have neither the overall scoring punch, nor the depth of the Canadiens. However, they have more physically big men who can deliver a punishing body check than any other team in the league.Too, they have long memories. In fact the memories of few can extend to playing on a winning Cup team. Of the Bruins themselves only Coach Milt Schmidt can make that claim. General Manager Lynn Patrick achieved that playing honor with the New York Rangers; Vic Stasiuk with the Boston Bruins. Thus the Hub Club can definitely be tabbed as a “hungry team.”Because of this the belief is that they will make a better showing than during the regular season when they bowed nine times, and were tied in two others in 14 games. Of the three games the Bruins captured, two came at the end of the season. One of these was the game in which Boston poured five goals past an inept young goalie following an injury to Jacques Plante. The other came on the season’s next to last night when third place still beckoned Milt Schmidt’s crew. However, the series may extend beyond last year’s five games, and the scores and plays may be far more competitive, but the end result will be the same. Montreal will retain the Stanley Cup, and become the second team in history to win in three straight years.Downs DetroitMontreal suffered little in winning from Detroit. The Wings’ game battle took no physical toll of the Habitants. In addition, the extra rest should benefit the idle Tom Johnson and the scarcely used Dollard St. Laurent. These men can be key factors to Montreal. Both are fine defense players who have languished in Doug Harvey’s shadow. In fact the solid balance of the Montreal club is well exemplified by the presence of recruit defense man A1 Langlois, the only player in the Canadien lineup who is not a veteran of last season’s Cup finals. Thus all signs point to a victory which will not be easily Won, but one which will see the Cup removed from its display case in the Forum for presentation to Captain Rocket Richard, then restored to the setting it has occupied since 1956.
