Troy St. wins GSC titleTROY, Ala. — Host Troy State University paced the four Gulf South Conference track teams which competed in the GSC track and field meet held here yesterday, gathering 115 total points to win the meet.TSU bested second place finisher Mississippi College by 43 points. Delta State University came in a limping third with 25 points and Jacksonville State University a poor fourth with 2 points.Troy State tied one GSC record in the event and set two others. Mike Carr tied the GSC pole vault record of 15’6” set by Grady Saucier of Southeastern Louisiana in 1973 and TSU’s 400-meter relay time of 41.10 bettered the 1979 mark of 41.35 set by MC.Troy State’s other record resulted from the team gaining its fourth consecutive GSC track win.Charles Oliver of TSU was named coach of the year for the second consecutive year.' DSU’s only two blue ribbons came from Terry Underwood, who had a distance of 49’5” in the shot put, and Billy Brooks, who had a time of 53.31 for the 400-meter intermediate hurdles.Delta State captured three second places in the meet: K.T. Chase had a distance of 23’93/4’ in the long jump, Brooks had a time of 15.02 in the 110-meter high hurdles and Darnell Scott had a time of 1:54.95 in the 800 meter run.Two DSU third places came from the 400 meter relay (time—42.22) and from the mile relay (time—3:26.77).
