224 AMC MATADORS BOUGHT BY SHERIFF(Dtt•ntf CHIN SHUTAutomotiveWilliam McGuire Named Chevrolet Zone ManagerThe Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept, has purchased 224 American Motors Matador sedans for general law enforcement use, according to Robert W. Crust, AMC director of fleet and government sales.Crust said the County’s action brings the number of major law enforcement agencies using AMC cars for patrol and administrative functions to approximately UK) nationally.Specifications SetSheriff Peter J. Pitchess said the decision to replace a large part of the department’s fleet of 686 vehicles with 1973 Matadors was made after evaluating and testing several makes of four-door sedans.Prior to the purchase of vehicles each year, Pitchess said, specifications are prepared by the sheriff’s department in conjunction with the Los Angeles County mechanical department.The specifications are then supplied to prospective bidders who provide vehicles for evaluation.The vehicles undergo extensive testing for safety features such as cornering, steering and general road-handling characteristics at the Pomona Fairgrounds Raceway.They are also evaluated by drivers and passengers for their braking ability and overall suitability for law enforcement use.After tests are completed, the sheriff’s department indicates its top three choices, and bids are directed to the I^os Angeles County Board of Supervisors for its consideration and final selection of the lowest bid vehicle.To meet field operating needs, the Matadors have a redesigned push bar system (used to push standard vehicles from the roadway) that complies with new federal safety regulations, and an improved emergency lighting system, siren, and public address system.“Best Available”“The new Matadors, In our opinion, are the best vehicles currently available to assist our deputies in meeting the challenge of crime in the streets today,” Pitchess said.Crust noted that the Los Angeles City Police Dept, replaced more than half of its fleet last year with AMC Matadors.T h e appointment of William H. McGuire as zone manager for Chevrolet at Los Angeles was announced by Robert M. O’Connor, the division’s general sales manager.McGuire, who has been zone manager at Detroit for three years, succeeds M. J. Schumacher, who has been named zone manager at Memphis.A native of Janesville, Wis., McGuire is a graduate of Columbia College in Dubuque, Iowa, and a former professional baseball player. He joined Chevrolet in 1946 after serving in World War II as an Air Force captain.Following a series of assignments from 1946 to 1955, he was promoted to a s s i stant manager for dealer organization and analysis at central offire in Detroit in 1955. He became assistant zone manager at Oklahoma City In 1957; owner relations de-part ment manager In1959; Wichita zone manager in 1964; and Kansa* City zone manager In1966. He was named zone manager at Detroit inJanuary 1970.Highway System42,500 MilesThe right-of-way for the completed 42,500 mile Interstate Highway System will occupy about 8/100 of one percent of the total land area of the contiguous United States, the H i ghway Users Federation reports.The completed system will carry 20 per cent of all motor vehicle traffic.
