Jefferson and Marion County schools strive to keep pace with the rapid growth of the city and county and to provide the bestn educational advan tages for children of the coun ty. Through the years, many improvements have been made and many others are planned. In a school bond election held April 6, Marion County voters cast their votes for the issuance of $525, 000 in bonds for the construction of a new 500 pupil elementary school which is presently being built. The completion date is expec ted to allow the new plant to be ready for occupancy in September of this year. The brick veneer building will be completely air condi tioned and will offer the lat est in teaching aids for ele mentary students. The buildi ng is being constructed on a beautiful pine studder site located just off U.S. Highway 59 North. Other construction in the school district includes a com plete new football stadium and track facility, four new classrooms to be added to the Jefferson Junior and Senior High School and approximate ly $35, 000 remodeling pro gram on other buildings in the district. Total costs for the entire building program are estimat ed at $625, 000. All new fac ilities are expected to be com pleted for the 1969 fall term of school. The architectural firm designing the school is Swanson-Hiester, Wilson and Boland of Brownsville, Corpus Christi, Harlingen and Dallas. Leon Shoffner is superinten dent of the Jefferson Indepen dent School District. Schools in the Jefferson Inde pendent School District inclu de Jefferson High School, Wal ter Hinson, principal; Jeffer son Junior High, Stacy New man, principal; Jefferson Ele mentary, Marion Betts, prin cipal; Central High School, Fred Lockett, principal; Cen tral Elementary School, G.C. Chatham, principal; Victory High School and Elementary, J. L. Scott, principal; and Smithland School, Arthur Wes ley, principal. At mid-semester, 1924 stu dents were enrolled in the school system. In the district there were 84 faculty mem bers not including Title I teachers and aides. Schools in the Jefferson In dependent District are partici pating in Title I preschool, teacher aides, and remedial material, Title II library and visual aids, and Title II test ing programs. Other schools in the county are Hall Elementary School in Hall District and Prospect Elementary School in the Pros pect District and the Maced onia Elementary School in Jackson District. Principal at Hall School is Mrs. Grace Hood. There are approximate ly 40 students enrolled at Hall School. Principal at Prospect School, where 38 students are enrolled, is vis. Joy Key. Vera Thomas is principal at Macedonia Elementary School where 35 students are enrolled County school superintenden ts W. J. Francis. In addition to the public schools in the county, there is the Jefferson Academy, a Seventh Day Adventist school, established in 1914 with James Ball as its first principal. Later in that first year, work was started on a new school buil ding. In 1965, Jefferson Aca demy was taken over by the Texas Conference of Seventh Day Adventists, in the last three or four years, more than $200, 000 has been put into the school plant.
