DESIGNER OF THEELECTRIC CHAIR DIESDR. ALPHONSO D. ROCKWELLDr. Alphonso David Rockwell, one of New York’s oldest physicians and the scientist credited with devising the present system of electro-execution, died April 12th after a brief illness. He was ninety-two years old. Dr. Rockwell was educated at Kenyon, a matriculate of the class of ’66, and at Bellevue Hospital Medical College. His interest in electro-theropeutics began soon after his return from the Civil war (in which he was said to have been the youngest surgeon), and tookup general practice in New York.A ranking authority on the science of electro-therapeutics, Dr. Rockwell never ceased to regret that he was drafted by the state to aid in the development of electro-execution. He was bitterly opposed to capital punishment, declaring a year ago: “The worst use you can put a man to is to kill him.” Dr. Rockwell preferred to recall his days as surgeon in the Civil war.It was in 1870 that in one of his case books Dr. Rockwell recorded the (Continued on Page 6, Column 3)
