Vincent Hospital shortly after.In company with Sister M. Tbeo-data, her superior. Sister M. Blanche had started to attend to business matters. and was crossing the street al llie Circle when the accident occurred. Sister Theodala. thinking that her companion was by her side, addressed a remark, hut received no response, glancing around, she saw the body of Sister .Mary Blanche lying on the ground bleeding profusely. A rushing auto had knocked her down, breaking every rib in her body, crushing her liver and other organs to a pulp and leaving a great bleeding wound in her head. Kind hands quickly carried the nun to the sidewalk, where Patrolman Moriarty placed his coat under her head for a pillow. Quickly reaching her companion, Sister Theodata knelt by her side and prayed aloud for the dying nun, the policeman and awe-stricken and weeping bystanders, many of whom were non-Catholics. joining in the responses. Sister Mary Blanche, to the surprise of all about, retained consciousness and gave voice to prayers and aspirations. An ambulance rushed her to St. Vincent Hospital. where a priest gave In-r Kxlreme Unction. while the dying Sister, still conscious, recited aloud an act of contrition and gave Sister Theodata a few little messages before passing to a better world. The attendant physicians marvelled that she could have retained consciousness long enough to receive the last rites of the Church, while I he hundreds surrounding her mangled body at Hie scene of the accident. were deeply impressed by tin* Christian fortitude with which the gentle nun faced the approach of death, and the firm failli inspiring tin' prayers and ejaculations falling from her dying lips.Sister Mary Blanche was horn in Xenia. O.. fifty-nine years ago and became one of the Sisters of Providence nearly thirty-five years ago.
