Revolt lx» (he Ohio Penitentiary Prevented.Mani:Through an orderly, well disposed con- house vict, Wardeu Van »SJyke learned last week of a contemplated revolt of the prisoners in the Pcniteutiary, to culmi-nate Saturday even ingin the dining room, ~fien while they—more than a regiment of( rejat£ hardened, reckless men—were assembled for supper. The plan was gotten up by a convict named Blacburn, from Gallia county, and at various times communicated, until the whole thousand and sixtv men were informed of the plot, which was, to overpower and kill the guards, when all were assembled in the vast dining room, then force the large gate at the south-east corner, kill the guards on the walls, if necessary, aud when outside of the walls every man take care of himself. The discovery of the plot by the Warden, however frustrated the bloody design,, and ou Saturday evening, when each company of men were told by their guards of the discovery. a more chop-fallen looking set of villains could not he imagined. Previously, however, the ring-leaders had been taken from the shops and dungeoned, where a little restriction will probably be exercised. There can be no doubt but that wholesale slaughter, rapine and plundering were prevented by a timely disclosure of the matured plans of the desperadoes; for what a volcanoe of vice and pout up passions is concentrated in the hearts of that regiment of confined villainy! Penitentiaries are dear luxuries, a fact that can be appreciutad alter two or three attempts to revolt, when a constant dread of something terrible lurks in the minds of citizens. The sooner a new Penitentiary is built and three or four hundred convicts moved into it from this, the better for Columbus and all parties coueerned.—State Jour nalj 24th,[From the Chicago Journal, April IS.]
