City asks worth of old fire truckHow do you determine the value of an old fire truck that apparently falls into the category of an “antique” vehicle? This question has been investigated by City Manager Dale Rieth at the request of Venice City Council in an attempt to arrive at a value for insurance purposes for the city’s 1926 LaFrance fire engine. At present, the vehicle is insured only for liability purposes and council feels it should be further insured because of its value as an antique.Rieth reports that the assignment has proven to be difficult, due primarily to the lack of apparent experience inestablishing values for old fire trucks compared with other antique vehicles.INFORMATION received by Rieth from Gary Fethers, president of the Antique Car Club of Sarasota, revealed that although he has no specific information pertaining to a 1926 model, he has found in the 1978 edition of “Old Car Value Guide Book” that a 1925 LaFrance, 90 percent restored, is worth $4,800.Fethers’ source also disclosed a value of $4,600 for a 1927 Model 91 Pumper that was 85 percent restored.♦Using these values and ignoring the fact that a 1926 fire truck is irreplaceable, Rieth suggested to council that Venice’s apftque engine might legitimately be worth $5,000 to $6,000. Hfe added, however, that he is n^ waiting for answers from several other sources to which inquiries were made.
