PIONEER CITIZEN OF VICINITY PASSES AWAY IN CALIFORNIAWord has been received here of the death of J. W. Sappington in San Pedro, Cal., last Friday night at 9:30 o’clock.Mr. Sappington was born in She\by township, Tippecanoe county, May10, 1835. He was the third son and the last of the family of six children born to Stephen and Mary Foster Sappington. He spent his early life in the vicinity of his birth. When the old home was broken up he located in Warren county, in the Armstrong neighborhood, where he resided until six years ago, when he went to California to spend his remaining days in the land of sunshine.Mr. Sappington was a stalwart character of the old type; always a republican in politics; a member of the Masonic lodge at Green Hill for almost half century; he was a charter member and first Worthy Patron of the local O. E. S. He took a great delight in the work of the order and was very efficient. He was also a member of the Odd Fellow lodge of this place.Mr. Sappington never marled. He was a prosperous farmer and a suc-eesful business man.A number of nephews and neiees reside in this community. Besidesthe Dougherty family, Mrs. John W. Cosby, of Otterbein; Mrs. Wallace Marshall and Mrs. J. C. Foster of Lafayette*His last illness was of several days’ duration.The interment was made in San Pedro, as he requested.He had the best of care that competent nurse and skilled physician could give, '.and some of his good Indiana friends were with him in his last hours.iciaactatrIfnLiiivAtlt;C■ftnJF
